Stair-casing Le Procope

by cecylia on November 1, 2010

Le Procope is the oldest restaurant cafe in the world. It was founded in 1686 and has served distinguished guests like Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin and even Napoleon. Before he became the commanding general he came to eat at Le Procope but could not pay for his meal so he left his hat at the restaurant as ransom. But Napoleon never came back for his hat and so it is still on display at the restaurant.

Le Procope is one of my favourite restaurants in Paris. The first time I went there 2 years ago they served a different wine for every course. It was amazing. You should see the post about it here (I was wearing a vintage jumpsuit on these same stairs)

6 months ago I visited Le Procope, I got really bad food poisoning from the ‘Special Fish’ dish. I ended up being bed-ridden for 3 days. I threw up at Laduree, scared away French ladies and missed some buying appointments. I highly not recommend eating fish in winter months in Paris.

Believe it or not, this time I decided to give Le Procope another chance, yes I am a very forgiving woman. The taking-photos on the stairs has now become an obsession. I have a photo on the stairs every time I visit Le Procope, mainly to pass boredom whilst we wait for a vacancy for a dinner booking.

October 2010- See by Chloe dress from Net-a-Porter, vintage belt from Milan market, Jil Sander sandals from Milan.

March 2010- vintage cape and fur, MaxMara pants, vintage boots, Country Road gloves, Salvador Dali lips brooch and Gucci clutch

Every time we dine here we have oysters…they’re huge! Actually I always have 3 courses every time we dine out in Paris. It motivates me to walk more…

I stayed away from fish this time…and had ‘Calf’s head casserole’. It is an old fashioned dish…yes I am very brave. Even the waitress who served me the ‘head’ admitted that she’s never tried it. I offered her some from my plate but she turned down my generosity.

And the best dessert dish there? The mixed sorbet plate, from clockwise- strawberry, mango (tastes like a real frozen mango), raspberry, lemon and vanilla bean. Delicious! I’d come just to eat these scoops next time. My 3rd time at Le Procope has somehow offset my previous traumatic experience there. It will always be one of my favourite restaurants to visit when I’m in Paris.

Perhaps you’re wondering why anyone would visit the place that caused them nightmarish gastro…I had the privilege to attend a church service in Paris before heading to Le Procope at the Luxembourg Church, near the Gardens. It was an English-speaking service and the sermon was much needed for my ears and my soul. It was about covenant and forgiveness. I was so filled with joy and peace I think that’s why I had the courage to dine at Le Procope again. And I’m glad I did.

Dressed Up for Alldressedup

by cecylia on October 23, 2010

I had the pleasure of attending the Alldressedup party in Paris. I had just seen the new collection the day before and let me tell you, it is mind-blowingly beautiful. It makes the buyer’s job so achingly difficult because every piece is so wearable and practical. Think tops and dresses that will take you straight from the office to drinks, in luxurious fabrics and gorgeous colours.

The clothes aside, I met some lovely people with incredible fashion sense- such as Stacey Jones, fashion director of Chicago Magazine. I loved her orange Dolce & Gabanna jacket which she threw on as a cape, her Celine shearing Boston bag which I described as a ‘face’ and her YSL pony skin leopard print pumps. So chic!

I’m in a Manoush (a Parisian label I’ve recently fallen in love with) backless wool dress (a little souvenir from Paris), vintage ostrich clutch and Fendi boots. Did I mention that Michelle Yeoh dropped by? Here she is with her husband Jean Todt, Tina Tan-Leo (creator of Alldressedup) and her husband, Lionel (CEO of Alldressedup). Tina is wearing an Alldressedup shirt (we have this shirt in our boutique!) and yes that’s a Cuban cigar.

I couldn’t resist the chance to get a photo with Michelle even though she looked way better than me from every angle, and she’s nearly twice my age. *sigh*

Oh and turns out, the divine ZhangZiYi is also a fan of Alldressedup. Recently she visited the ION Orchard Alldressedup store and bought many garments with her stylist..

I met some ‘kawaii’ stylists from Japan. The lovely lady on the left also has a blog but it’s in Japanese! I can’t read it!

No good shoes can escape my radar.

I saw this photo a week later and thank God my legs were neatly crossed. With the chic Japanese team, wish I can speak Japanese!

As I sat eating away at the amazing French desserts, one of Tina’s friends started chatting with me and told me that ‘sugar kills collagen’. She was such an elegant and beautiful lady and when she told me her age I nearly fainted. She looked 20 years younger. I think I should put the sugar away…

Amazing people I’ve met

by cecylia on October 12, 2010

I’m back in Melbourne! And missing Paris terribly. Here are a few people I want to introduce you to.. some of which need no introduction

1. Christine Barro- owner and buyer of her amazing accessories boutique in Melbourne. I like to consider her as my mentor.

2. Elena from Nicole Brundage. I felt so rude because I interrupted her lunch but she still gave me an excellent showing of the latest collection from the New-York based shoe designer.

3. Mawi, the jewellery designer!!! I couldn’t’ believe my luck to have her explain to me the inspirations of her latest jewellery collections. She designs 2 lines every season- the Costume Luxe and Heirloom collections. Don’t you love her vintage kimono cape?

Wearing MaxMara cashmere cape, vintage YSL dress, YSL belt, MAWI jewellery, Omero leggings, vintage clutch and Fendi boots.

4. I met another young talented jewellery designer. It turns out that Jacey Withers and I have so much in common- we’re both pastor’s kids and we’re passionate about animals. Apparently he really wanted to be a vet when he was little, and me? A jewellery designer =D Most of his pieces are endangered species- like the snow leopard. His new collection is inspired by love lost at sea. The pieces are as romantic as they sound.

5. And finally, the designer everyone loves- Diane von Furstenberg. The original creator of the wrap dress. I saw her at Milan Paris Fashion Week (read here) but I was a little awestruck so I didn’t say ‘hi’ but this time in Paris, my skin was thicker and my courage was stronger from all the sugary goodness I’ve been indulging in. Her boutique was actually just around the corner from our apartment in Paris. When she learnt that I was from Australia she told me that she’s about to open a DVF store in Sydney! Lucky Sydney-fashionistas! Ah looking at the divine Diane and those legs, perhaps I should take up Pilaties too?

Wearing See by Chloe dress, Miu Miu dress (as coat), snakeskin boots…should have asked Diane what she was wearing…

Spending a week in Paris has educated me more than text books every could in the same time. I’ve learnt so much from the people, the culture, and from their appreciation of the fine arts and cuisine. I’ve learnt to dress better, eat better, see more art, walk more and chew slower. Let’s hope these new habits never go away…

First Day in Milan

by cecylia on October 3, 2010

Greetings from Milan! Have I ever told you my ‘ultimate perfect day’? Well there are many ways to spend an ideal day but for it to be perfect, the most important ingredient would have to be a vintage market of some sort.

And I was so blessed to spend my first day in Milan at the Mercatone del Naviglio Grande. The coincidental thing is that this market only occurs once a month on the last Sunday starting in September. So not only was I lucky enough to catch it on my short stay in Milan, the market itself was just a stroll away from where I stayed! Well when I say stroll I mean about 1km. But there’s nowhere my Repettos can’t take me. These trusty ballet flats helped me survive the plane ride as well as 3 days straight of walking!

There are over 400 stalls! I was in vintage heaven.

A gentlemen wearing cute animals (mainly dogs, but some pigs seemed to have made it into the mix) walked past me so I grabbed him for a photo. And if you are really observant then you would have noticed an addition to my outift- the golden belt. A market souvenir =) There is a really sweet (and super crammed) vintage store on this street that houses some fine vintage gems. I also found a mint condition YSL dress there. The lady who owns the shop is so lovely and some how she knew right away that I ‘worked in fashion’…There were so many pieces to tempt me and I spent more than an hour in less than a small room rummaging through and trying everything on. The vintage bags were so enticing too but I had to stay faithful to my lovely vintage Nina Ricci.

This lady is the creator of the red chair and not only did her lovely smile catch my attention, so did her earrings and her espadrilles. She’s holding my card upside-down…but let’s not nit-pick.

What a lady, love her crazy accessories. I bought a pair of Valentino sunnies from the same stall she got hers from. But my hubbie has stolen them.

Dress: Felder Felder, necklace: Natalia Brilli, belt: vintage, bag: Vintage Nina Ricci, shoes: repetto

After a major day at the markets, we ate gelati- only 2.50 Euros for 3 scoops!!! What a bargain! I wish I could eat it everyday!

Thank the Lord for such a perfect day- perfect weather, perfect scenery and perfect company.

Nevertheless I’m already homesick! Hope you are all well in Melbourne, how’s the weather like?
