You know how my style mantra is that ‘every day is worth dressing up for’? But did you also know that I am a pedantic light-traveller? See my advice about “How to Travel in Style” here. Well, I kinda *cough cough* failed on our babymoon. Our first trip to the US, ignorance was not bliss. Not being able to predict the weather, the full list of activities to participate in, nor the rate of expansion of my pregnant belly, I brought way too much. Just in the shoe department, I packed 5 pairs… From Left to Right: Shoes: Repetto flats / Arezzo Heels / Marc by Marc Jacobs Flats / Milly for Sperry Top-Sider Shoes / Habbot Pumps / Zara Flats / Vintage Snakeskin Pumps / Flipsters / Vintage Boots / Nike Runners Bags: Jacki Anderson Bag / DIY tote / Sarah Conners Python Tote
By day one, thanks to the flight, the pregnancy, the fiery LA heat, and the non-stop walking, my feet had expanded, thereby refusing to fit into all aforementioned footwear. Not willing to invest in a pair of Chanel flats for what I hope is just a temporary expansion in pedal size (dear Lord, please let this be temporary!), I found my saviour flats from Zara. And of course, my trusty Flipsters. When I reached New York, a pair of Nike runners (not purchased for the trip, not even for the rest of the pregnancy, but for the month immediately after miniKee’s birth…), bright python pumps, white cowboy boots (What was I thinking? I blame it on preggy brains?) and some comfortable orange boatshoes by Milly also joined my shoe-menagerie. The boat shoes were a God-send but they refused to match my dressy outfits…
I had better luck with my bags. The Jacki Anderson bag received so many admiring glances in the Qantas Business lounge. “Is the pregnant girl going on a business trip?” I could almost hear them ask with their longing looks. The luscious leather and perfect shape of the structured tote upped the style ante even when I looked weary-eyed and lost. Thanks to its bright orange lining that served as the caffeine-free-wake-up-call and well-positioned pockets, I never fumbled when I wore my Jacki Anderson. The Sarah Conners python tote was my vacation must-have. As soon as the butter-soft shoulder strap was flung across my arm, I was in holiday mode. It was the instant de-stresser. I wore it as a clutch during fashion week, the python hide is so soft it didn’t mind being folded in half. And thanks to all the nifty zips and internal pockets, my life (namely my business cards, loose change and sunglasses) was in check.

Of course, you won’t encounter these problems if you’re not going on a babymoon. I’ve learnt my lesson. Next time, if I ever head on a babymoon again, I shall only bring 1 pair of shoes, ie the ones on my feet, suitable for the flight, and shop as soon as I land. By then, I’ll know the weather conditions and the new shoe size I’ll need. And it most likely will be a pair of two-toned lambskin Chanel ballet flats.
Oooh so many shoes! Such a shame your feet have grown with the pregnancy, but I’m sure they will be back to normal after you get to hold miniKee! :) My aunt had an absolutely terrible time with her second pregnancy – her hands and feet were so swollen. She had to have her wedding and engagement rings cut off in the end to save her fingers! But afterwards, she was back to her normal foot and hand size. :)
Love the two outfits as well, printed dresses are always lovely choices.
thanks Mica. Indeed, fluid retention is no fun, it only happened because I walked around so much in the US. As soon as I got back to Melbourne(especially because it’s colder here) I’ve gone back to normal :D Although my shoes are definitely tighter, thank God my fingers are still the same :D
Hi Cecylia, I love this post. Honest & funny & stylish too! I also love your final line about traveling with 1 pair of shoes and purchasing the rest! ;) Actually my husband jokingly says that money spent on holidays shopping is ‘holiday money’ so it comes from a different budget!

p.s. A BIG thank you for writing a wonderful post for Christmas…we can’t wait to share it!!
Ah what a wise husband you have- I love the way he thinks! It makes total sense though- to be well dressed and stylish at your destination we are better off buying what we need there. All the planning in the world sometimes falls by the wayside, as in this case.. :D
love your style!!
