Lace is More and a Shoesales.com.au Give-away!

by cecylia on January 13, 2012

I’ve been craving for a pair of slippers for a while now, and despite seeing so many gorgeous embroidered velvet versions online, I wasn’t ready to part a small fortune for a pair I couldn’t try on. That’s why when I saw the heeled version, “Olive“, on Shoesales.com.au, I applauded the ingenious readaption of the highly covetable gentleman’s shoe into something more feminine but still highly practical. Although it is not embellished in any way, I am deeply attracted to the symmetry and contour of the shoe, plus it beckons for many DIY ideas! Well at least some vintage shoe clips have found their match! To say it was love at first sight would be an understatement.

Since “Olive” is a fine union of ladylike elegance and polished manly refinement, I decided to channel this fusion into my outfit as well. Teaming Christopher Kane lace, in conspicuous neon, and a tailored Alexander Wang tuxedo jacket dress, feminine jewellery and a manly briefcase (I bought it for hubby years ago, but he never use it), deemed an appropriate representation of my inner style philosophy. I call it ‘tomboy chic‘.

Since Shoesales.com.au has always been a generous supporter of Cecylia.com, they are once again giving away a pair of heels, this time, the black suede “Olive” pumps! If you fancy a pair, here’s how to score them:

Realway vs Runway

by cecylia on September 7, 2010

On Wednesday night we made an appearance at the Designer series Runway 2 of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. My girlfriends and I dressed up for the occasion and just to be rebels we wore mostly international labels.

From left: Georgie, who should be a model, is just stunning;  Jess, of whatwouldkarldo.com, the chicest stylist/blogger I know; me, I tried to support as many designers we stock as possible…

Georgie: Zara jacket, Kookai top, Chanel necklace, Chloe python Paraty bag and Alexander McQueen booties

Jess: Zara jacket, Karl Who T shirt, Felder Felder cross studded skirt, Georgina Goodman booties, Chanel bag, bowler hat

Me: Karla Spetic blouse, Felder Felder ring skirt, Gail Sorronda dinner jacket, Lanvin pumps, Marc Jacobs bow bag, vintage pearl necklace. Detailed photo of Aris Geldis Paris bracelet I wore below:

I must admit, we are picky when it comes to fashion shows. Georgie critiqued the models, Jess critiqued the styling and I critiqued the designs. We asked: why were there so many bridal dresses for a runway show? Why did so many Aussie designers copy Lanvin? Why couldn’t so many models walk properly? Is it because they wore cheap shoes like Betts, Wittner, Aldo and RMK? And what about Lucy McIntosh’s (The Face of MSFW) alarmingly big grin….she is extraordinarily gorgeous, nevertheless

This coral suit from Yeojin Bae was my favourite look of the night- it sums up femininity and strength with one bright hue. And the tailoring is impeccable. It’s no wonder her garments are stocked all over the globe in the finest stores.

The one show we all enjoyed was Christine’s (where I got my Lanvin and Sonia Rykiel pumps from), we loved all the floral printes by Etro and Lanvin accessories. The looks were romantic, summery and lady-like Bohemian. Although Christine is not a designer but she is one fabulous buyer. And my mentor, she just doesn’t now it yet =)

These lace ears are stunning but I don’t have a spare $500…

Also the green florette dress by Yeo jin Bae was a show-stopper. Definitely the best look to end her runway series with. I like Aussie designers who don’t think like a typical Aussie designer- like Gail Sorronda and Karla Spetic. They’re on a league of their own and dance to the beat of their own drums.

Alice Burdeu in the floral dress. I was on Team Alice the whole season for Australia’s Next Top Model (when I used to have time to watch TV).

Overall it was still a great night, I met many beautiful bloggers such as Sarah from Sarah Style Emporium, LeeYong from Style Wilderness, Catherine from Whattowear, Phoebe aka Lady Melbourne, Sam from Fashion Recruit, Sarah from Style Melbourne, Cheryl of Busichic and the gorgeous Alisha from Sea of Ghosts.  Of course, Phoebe and Cheryl are also part of the Melbourne Street Fashion team.

Style Wilderness (with the funkiest earrings), Lady Melbourne

Sea of Ghosts, she’s also a jewellery designer… and a Daisy Lowe-look-alike in this photo. Adore her style. She has inspired me to dig out my long dresses again.

The beautiful Sam from Fashion Recruit, designer of Bento!

My sweet sweet friend Cheryl of Busichic, and the most outgoing fashionista I’ve ever met – she seems to know everyone who is anyone!

The night was fun but it is nothing compared with what I’m about to witness in Milan and Paris in September. So stayed tuned for some real fashion. And oh, I may meet up with Gail Sorronda in Milan!

What is a Peplum?

by cecylia on January 20, 2010

Recently I learnt a new word ‘peplum’. A peplum is the short over-skirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress. In my mind, it is synonymous with the sexy secretary look. Take a look at a couple of examples demonstrated below:

Rebecca Romjin-Stamos for Bebe. Belted Peplum Patent Leather Jacket Jet black shine.

Here’s Sienna in a coat with a peplum and a girl with a peplum made from gorgeous drapery.

Here are some pretty strapless minidresses with peplums- they add really interesting details. So frivolous!

Of course, Miuccia never misses any trend. In fact, she reworks the classic peplum in her Prada lace series. They were gorgeous dresses but what’s with the sheerness of the skirts?

Booti-licious

by cecylia on December 9, 2009

Recently as I was organising the photos from my ‘sweet accessories’ folder to group like items together, and I was caught by surprise as I saw that most of the shoes I am coveting right now are ankle boots. It’s summer in Melbourne but European fashion is a season a head, hence the most delicious boots right now are super hot. I wanted to share with you these gorgeous booties, let me which pair is your favourite.

Christian Louboutin never puts a foot wrong. These red -lacquered metallic magenta space-age booties are super sleek. I love the quilting details and the little zips! The unusual colour will certainly attract a lot of attention from envious on-lookers.

These stunning Chloe booties are fit for a queen. I can just see them on Marie Antoinette, played by Kirsten Dunst, of course. How very Renaissance! Do you remember all the macaroons in that beautiful Sophia Coppola movie? I love the triple embellished bow detailing. Why have 1 bow when you can have 3? These sophisticated Mary-Janes (yes I know, technically these are not ankle boots) look gorgeous on foot and on the shelf. These are a piece of art.

Ok, these Oscar de la Renta lace booties are pretty neat too. I can see Daphne Guinness in them =) They’re extremely ladylike but these are a modern take on prim. I would definitely wear these with jeans to give these feminine heels an edge.

I had to include another pair of Chloe booties. I don’t usually like purple but these shoes are just divine. I love the laser-cut panel and the mock-alligator skin feel of them. They are so interesting to look at, from every angle, and I can guarantee that compliments will not stop coming when you have these beauties on.

Brian Atwood used to design for Versace, before he realised he was onto something good, and launched his solo career. These butter-soft ankle boots will last seasons after seasons and match every outfit. They are not too dressy but still have that luxurious look. Must-have for winter! I love the ruched detail, the bow strings and the ‘hooded’ ankle area.

How does Christian Louboutin come up with so many ingenious designs? These are not quite lacy but the geometric pattern is very unique. The sheerness of these booties is both sexy and demure. Just add some red nail polish and off you go!

Now these Camilla Skovgaard bi-colour cutout boots are made for walking. I love the versatility of these shoes- they are both glamorous and have abundant street cred. The rubber soles make these a joy to walk around all day in and the extra grip give you more confidence when you need to run from the paparazzi. Thanks to the colours chosen, these boots go with everything.

I found this boot from Nordstrom. I simply adore the buckles and the leather straps and the peep-toe details. These are edgy and comfortable and if I set foot in them, they would be glued to my soles. Great shoes to toughen up a flowing dress.

I think we’ve all been hit by the Alexander Wang wave. He is the darling of high-end street fashion right now and every piece he designs is a must/lust-have. Check out this backpack vest with multiple gold zips and pockets and the buckled ankle boots! I am a softie for zip detailing and you can wear this vest over everything. you probably won’t even need a handbag if you have this vest, there are enough pockets for your phone, keys, lip gloss, ipod, gum, spare change, credit cards and even snacks.

Jane Aldridge’s mom wears a vest similar to this, see here. I have to admit, I do love Alexader Wang. The truth is out!

So which pair is your favourite?
