Earlier this week I went to the launch of Eat A Scroll with friends to eat a scroll, or two, or three…
Eat A Scroll is Melbourne’s first scroll boutique. The Pop Up Scroll store is the brainchild of husband and wife team Julian and Tammy Chew. After studying industrial design at uni, where he met wife Tammy, Julian followed his love for food to open a café. You may recall the former Lip Café in Ivanhoe, always packed with patrons. Well with a surname like “Chew” you’re destined for the food industry. I wonder if anyone in their family has thought of a chewing gum line…
Family name jokes aside, Aria trained pastry chef Julian (under Matt Moran in Sydney) knew he was onto something when he noticed that his cream cheese cinnamon scrolls were selling out every day. Customers from all over Melbourne would flock to Lip just to devour his doughy creations. It helps when you only use organic flour and free range eggs.
The menu at Pop Up Scroll is pretty extensive as far as cinnamon scrolls are concerned. Choose your favourite fine-dining toppings from original, with cream cheese icing, coconut white chocolate (a personal favourite), peanut butter & banana, chocolate & caramel, apple & frangipane, and cherry & pistachio. And while I’m on a roll, for a limited time, Julian has created a special Christmas scroll complete with cherries and gingerbread! It’s delish!Pop Up Scroll is only popping out scrolls until May, so if you’re not sure what to do this weekend, why not head down to 86 Smith St Fitzroy and eat a scroll or 2, or 3?
I wore: Sportscraft Shirt / Chorus Shintai Skirt (last seen here) / Constance Roe ‘Tilda’ Bag / Bared ‘Weaver’ Sandals (last seen here)
