How do you overcome the problem of entertaining a fleeting fashion fad? Focus on making the subject in question in leather, of course. The peplum is a dress design feature with origins dating back to the 1800’s, but it wasn’t until its re-emergence on the fashion forefront in the 40s and 80s that made it a stylish staple. Utterly feminine and elegantly flattering, it’s no wonder designers are courting it like there’s no tomorrow. But instead of buying tops, skirts and dresses all adorned with peplums, I’ve discovered a more versatile, cost-effective and unexpected alternative: invest in a peplum belt. In leather, of course.
I found this raspberry 2-piece in the thrift store a little while back and just knew that it needed something extra. Something juicier. Looking a little like an ultra-mini skirt, this leather belt can also be styled to be the top of a strapless dress, and you can even wear it back to front to reveal a central gap. There is no more excuse to have a boring outfit…

And sorry to get a little fashion-side-tracked, but I learnt something useful last weekend that I would love to share with you. Do you love flowers? My local florist bestowed upon me some ‘secrets’ to longer lasting stems. This time round I bought a bouquet of graceful tulips, , my all-time favourites. He informed me that to prolong their lifespan, you need to do 3 things:
1. Add a teaspoon of sugar to the water
2. Along with a drop of White King
3. And using a needle (or a safety pin, like I did), pierce the stem just below each tulip bulb to ‘open’ up the flower so it can bloom better
My first time in assisting flowers ‘surgically’, we shall see how well their ‘cosmetic surgery’ will further enhance their beauty… Let me know how you go!
