As I only revealed the news of my pregnancy well into the 2nd trimester, I thought I’d recap my first trimester styles and share with you a little secret. Even before I knew that I was pregnant, I’d given up drinking alcohol. How? I hear you ask.
I used to drink at least a glass of white or Muscato every night. Although I’d never been drunk in my life, and only drink for pleasure, I did however have a weak spot for Sauv Blanc and an even weaker one for T Gallant’s Juliette Muscato. Even though I’ve always been a sensible drinker, it wasn’t until one day hubby came home to tell me about the shocking news he heard a Doctor speak about at his firm that made me quit.
Apparently, when we drink a glass of alcohol, our liver works hard to metabolise the alcohol in place of fat for 3 days. Even if we exercise and try to burn calories, we only get tired and all the fat cells remain untouched. For 3 days! I couldn’t believe it. I’d been running 3 times a week and for some reason, all the cakes and chips I’d been eating weren’t getting burnt off like they used to. I thought I was just getting older.
So I tried this self-experiment. I went cold turkey and stopped drinking for 3 days. Boy were they difficult. Habits are not easy to kill. And not to mention, the third night was a friend’s wedding and temptation was ever present. But a promise was a promise, and thank God, I stuck it out. Of course, I did seek solace in extra desserts… But a miracle happened. On the fourth day, I was able to fit into this outfit I’d been dying to wear for years. And since then, I’ve not had a drink.
So not only is my liver thanking me for it, but also MiniKee, as it turns out I was pregnant then all along. Go figure, sometimes it pays to listen to an expert.
