From the moment I laid my 4 eyes on Neo Dia at the Made in Melbourne runway show 1.5 years ago, I knew that this adorable and intelligent duo is going to reach the stars. (Just like I knew that Sienna Miller was going to be huge when I first saw her riding on a scooter with Jude Law, or that Isabel Lucas was meant for something much greater than Home and Away. I predicted that Catherine McNeil was going to amount to international stardom and that Alice Burdeau would win Australia’s Next Top Model.) Successful predictions aside, through their unique philosophies in design, unrivalled creativity, and fierce determination and diligence, Neo Dia is fast developing a cult following in the fashion-forward pack from around the globe. I’d just returned from Milan and Paris fashion weeks and was astounded by their architectural tailoring and conceptual pieces. Not long after I met them, they flitted off to Europe to showcase their collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week and have editorial features in Italian Vogue. Not bad for a first collection hey?
I caught up with the spunky designers, Becky Chua (with Alexandra Blak clutch & Finsk shoes) and Gavin Lowes recently to interview them for my blog.
I know you two are best friends, what qualities do you love about each other?
B: I love Gav’s rockstar smile and a sick sense of humour that always has me laughing.
G: A pocket rocket with peroxide white hair and killer Finsk shoes; whats not to love?
How does each NEO DIA design come about? Tell us how each garment is created.
We don’t have one way of designing and creating a garment. A lot of the time an inspiration for a sillouhette will come from discovering a fabric and how it reacts to folding or the movement and drape it creates. Other times it comes from a colour, an artwork or an image, music or theatre that we’ve experienced. Insipration comes from everywhere, thats the amazing thing about having the freedom to create our own label, we’re not restricted by creating completely commercial ranges. We can explore our inspirations and try and push the boundaries and to see fashion as art.
We love designers who push the creative boundaries. I’m a firm believer that fashion is an art-form. What kind of customer is the NEO DIA devotee?
The Neo Dia customer is strong and bold but she also understands and appreciates fashion. Our customer doesnt buy a garment for the label, she buys it becuase she loves the design and the quality, fabrics and finishing that is our range.
B: Blood Orange, Singing and dancing with friends, all things served at high tea on silverware… although dinner cooked by my boyfriend and eaten on the couch is also pretty special:D
