One Year of Torqueing

by cecylia on November 25, 2011

Candice De Ville, the Ambassador of Glamour, never ceases to wow me with her sheer beauty and sophistication. I’m a plain Jane next to her.

The gorgeous Cheryl (Business Chic) and Sarah (Sarah Style Emporium), both in delicious pink!

I’ve missed Lisa (Couturing) SO MUCH as she went to help the retail economy in the States. Check out this incredible Tibi skirt she picked up! There was major clutch envy surrounding her LV pouch from Madam Virtue. I’m no Louis addict, but this modern and sleek version has seriously stolen my heart.

Dean Drieberg, belting out his ultra smooth rendition of ‘Vogue’.

With the beautiful Sally (Styled by Sally), in her electric blue Josh Goot dress.

Stars of the Show: Celebrity Stylist Phillip Boon and Designer Jenny Bannister

Channeling a traffic light with the adorable Becky and Gavin of uber-label NEO DIA. These guys are dress architects.

What a Lady! The ravishing Phoebe (Lady Melbourne) and the delightful Dean, co-owner of one of the best boutiques in Melbourne, Madam Virtue

Outfit: vintage YSL dress (last seen here), vintage Jump cardigan, vintage belt, Kenzo bag, Chloe pumps and Alex Monroe jewellery

The highly anticipated one year birthday of Australia’s only live fashion forum, FASHION TORQUE, was celebrated in glamour and style at the Melbourne Town Hall a few nights ago. The hosts of the entertaining and informative fashion forum, celebrity stylist Phillip Boon and fashion designer Jenny Bannister, select relevant and interesting topics in fashion each month and invite guest pannelists to discuss them. We were ordered to dress in colourful cocktail attire. I was running around all day in meetings and seeing friends (so lovely to catch up with Jess, What Would Karl Do) and her baby boy Aston! So unfortunately I had to wear something more sensible and less frivolous :)

It was a sheer delight to spend time with the Melbourne fashion elite. Most of these guys have become like family to me over these few years and I still wake up pinching myself for the ridiculous amount of love, support and friendship I’ve been blessed with. I’ve learnt so much and met so many incredible people through Fashion Torque and am especially honoured to have been a pannelist on the forum. Happy birthday to you and I wish you many more days of speaking in style, discussing Dior, emphasising on elegance (and eloquence), and targeting the trends. Can’t wait for Fashion Torque in 2012!

Have a beautiful weekend lovelies, I’ll be vetting this weekend, so enjoy the sunshine for me! Last chance to enter the Edenborough Evans Double Ring Give-away!

Interview with Estelle

by cecylia on September 30, 2011

A few weeks back, I had coffee with a talented French-born, Australian-loving, ACNE-working, GPO-visiting (Can anyone guess who I am talking about?) gorgeous jewellery designer, whose pieces have adorned the likes of Anja Rubik to Sussie Bubble, it is none other than the amazing Estelle Dévé! I have been a fan of her intriguing jewels for a while now, I call them raw beauties. It was lovely to finally catch up in person. She is so stunning, and her French-flavoured accent made my interview with her even sweeter! Here Estelle opens up about her stylish and creative world as she chats about her roots, dreams, favourite designers and skinny French women!

You have a double degree in PR and marketing, what promoted you to become a jewellery designer?

I think I always somewhat knew I wanted to be a designer, but wasn’t really sure whether or not I’d be good enough at it or if that was exactly what was meant for me. I had been interested in fashion from a very young age and all my marketing and PR roles were linked to fashion. After years of selling, promoting and doing every possible fashion related job, it finally became clear to me that none of these roles felt right and that I had to be brave and try myself at designing.

You are French! Many say they see a ‘reminiscence’ of Yves Saint Laurent jewellery when they view your collection. How do you feel about that? How does your Parisian roots influence your design or your style aesthetics?

That is a very funny thing because for Australians, I seem to be the “archetype” of the french girl, but to me I couldn’t feel further away from it. I was always the weird kid who wouldn’t fit at school, and never felt really French. That said, I do feel that my french upbringing does influence my style massively. I am always going towards good quality, simple, battered investment pieces which I think is probably very French.

Is it true that French women are all skinny and gorgeous like you? :)

Haha :) Thanks, you’re making me blush… I don’t really think that’s very true. Australian girls are gorgeous! I think that people have this idea of Paris because they watch movies with pretty actresses in them, and look at photos taken during Fashion week, and then imagine that everyone in France looks like that. But we’re just pretty normal.. That said, I think the portions sizes at restaurants are way smaller than here, and people spend their time smoking and drinking coffee. Not very healthy but that won’t get you very fat either..

I know you design with an exclusive customer base in mind, who are some people you would love to see wear your jewellery pieces?

I think that what I would really love would be to see my jewellery worn by creative, active women. Career women. Women like Sofia Coppola or Phoebe Philo. Oh and I have a soft spot for Aurora Sansone, who assists Anna Dello Russo. She’s got the perfect mix of feminine and masculine clothing and I’d love to send her some jewels!

When it comes to clothing, I’ve seen you wear the most amazing denim pieces, I know you are an ACNE fan, which other designers do you love?

I think I go to different designers for different items. But for everyday wear, yes Acne is always a favourite but also Phillip Lim. He just works with the most amazing fabrics! For party dresses I love Christopher Kane and Proenza Schouler. If I had the budget I’d go for one of their dresses every season! Oh and last and not least, I LOVE Dries Van Noten. He does the most amazing shoes and I am somewhat addicted to them..

And finally, what are your dreams for Estelle Deve jewellery in the next few years?

I think nothing would make me happier than expanding my brands more overseas. I’d also love to be able to have my own little office and start employ people to work with me. And dreams-wise, working on new collaborations with exciting designers like Josh Goot, Ellery or Dion Lee would be amazing!

Merci beaucoup Estelle for sharing your insights! I can’t wait to sport some of your pieces soon! To shop Estelle’s pieces, visit her online store here.

What are you up to this weekend everyone? I’m working as a vet all weekend, going to a wedding on Saturday night and a gorgeous soiree on Sunday (planning outfits in my head!). Look forward to taking photos and sharing them with you next week! Have a beautiful and relaxing weekend! Thank you for your support and for reading my blog. I love your comments and contributions.

Come visit my Facebook and Twitter pages if you can’t wait until next week :)

2nd Bloggerversary Party!

by cecylia on June 10, 2011

Every year when my blog turns one year older, I hold a Bloggerversary Party. You can see the frivolity of last year’s shindig here. In the past year I’ve met so many more bloggers, so it was an awesome excuse to have everyone over at the boutique for some girly fun! And the theme of this year’s party was ‘Anna Dello Russo-esque’.

Sarah of Style Melbourne, Bianca of her gorgeous Parisian style blog, her title (il etait une fois ‘once upon a time’) sounds absolutely divine; and pretty-as-a-button Jasmine, our Friend in Fashion. 3 super chicks!

You should remember Leeyong from this post, she has previously worked for Vogue Japan, designed her own label, is Eurasian (so gorgeous!) and still makes her own clothes and accessories! Can you believe that she made her fuchsia dress!

The lovely ladies at Adorn came to give us makeup demonstrations. I am makeup-illiterate so it was great to learn the tricks of the trade. Mineral makeup is better for our skin and Adorn mineral cosmetics are 100% natural, and are an Australian product. I’m a follower now!

Guests are treated to the best: Cupcakes from none other than the delicious Cupcake Central, and macaroons from Parisian bakery La Tropezienne. I ate one from every flavour because I have missed these treats so much!

My dear dear friend Jess, of What Would Karl Do, who is going to the yummiest mummy ever! Congratulations once again Jess! I love Jess’ style, always on trend but always with an element of surprise.

Recently I met Aimmey, a freelance make-up artist. Check out her gorgeous gallery here. Aimmey’s passion for make up could rival my passion for fashion. So we hit it off right away and cannot wait for future collaborations! Theodore felt right at home next to her faux-fur vest.

My dearest photographer friend, Karen, one half of Finessence Photography, is also expecting soon! Congratulations to you too! Finessence just launched their studio on 122 Mailing Rd Canterbury, their studio is definitely worth checking out. Karen bought the Mawi long chain necklace for Christmas. Her Repetto heels are souvenirs from Paris. You can purchase them (in red orange) from our boutique!

I have to tell you a little about my red pants, I’m sure you’re wondering where they are from. They are actually souvenirs from ZARA Sydney. I have mentioned in a previous post that I don’t go shopping anymore. But when I do, it’s either to support talented designers or for ‘research’. I have a love/hate relationship with Zara. I love their business strategies but I dislike the fact they copy designers. However since I am a supporter at heart, I brought these red leather skinnies back to Melbourne. I wore them for the first time at this blog party, bent down to pick up a cupcake wrapper, and my left knee ripped 2 stitches. Yeb, on my first wear. And I paid over $300 for them. Oh well, that’s ZARA!

A feast for our eyes- thank you Leeyong and Lisa (Stylus Muse Blog) for brightening our day!

After the Adorn work shop, we gathered together to clear our lungs for some Sing Star fun!

Thank you my dear reader for supporting my blog, for reading it, commenting on it and following it. When you do any of those last 2, it’s better than chocolate for me. So *hint hint*

Someone I ought to thank (but could never thank enough for) is my dear husband. He is my best friend, my mentor, my blog creator, my photographer (he has taken nearly all the photos for my blog, except this photo) and my constant pillar of support. Without Chian, I would be blog-less, boutique-less and bag-less :) Thank you so much hunny bunny!

Oh, and what do you think of these defined eyebrows? Thank you Adorn! Hehehehe Hope you’re having a fabulous weekend!

What I wore: Vintage shirt, jacket, belt, Zara pants, Marc Jacobs heels

As soon as I got the program for LMFF, I immediately booked tickets to LMFF’S Opening Runway, Fashion Full Stop : Decades of Australian Fashion & Music. To call it an extravaganza still doesn’t do it justice. It is part fashion parade, part rock concert, and part theatrical spectacular. Famous faces, voices and talents all combined their creativity and originality to produce an epic show that has never been done before- showcasing Australian style and fashion from the 1960′s to today.

As this was a colossal show, hence f this blog post is also going to be pretty massive with a collection of photos from before, during and after the show. Enjoy!

First up, Guy Sebastien crooned whilst models draped in fantastical garments created by Australian icons Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson wowed everyone with their fun, colourful prints that these ladies created which placed Australia on the globe’s fashion radar. I have been wanting to meet Australia fashion’s first-ladies since I first started to read Vogue when I was a teen. My husband has always wanted to find out if Jenny Kee and us are related, turns out no, sadly, we cannot rely on the powers of nepotism :) Ah I was stoked nevertheless to come face to face with these 2 fabulous ladies. Jenny has a biography out, I must get myself a copy!

It was awesome to catch up with Tania at the Penthouse Mouse party, and it was great to see Daniel tonight, with his man-bag. They have just returned from their around-the-world fashion show tour! Always so stylish, Daniel and his gentleman-charm, from Fashionising.

The insanely talented Michelle Jank, who was the stylist for the fashion parade. Along with previous Vogue editor, Nancy Pilcher, the dynamic duo brought us the most amazing runway show I’ve ever seen. Every outfit was so meticulously ensembled. The colours, the textures, the balance, were all so perfect. The mix of vintage with modern was spot-on. Loved everything, especially the ‘denim’ sector, see above.

The incredible Melbourne duo, designer of fantastical frocks, Gwendolyne and Australia’s most high-profile milliner, a Man of Style, with the vastest knowledge of Australian fashion you will ever encounter,  Richard Nylon.

Do you recognise the Gail Sorronda Vashti dress on the singer?

What a pleasure and an honour it is to meet the Editor of Vogue Australia, Kristie Clements again. She is so nice to let me have a photo taken with her, I doubt that Anna Wintour would…

Looks familiar? I loved the insertion of the ballet duo with their romantic dance which accompanied Akira’s pieces – it was an original installation Akira had for his runway show at Rosemount in 2009.

This photo depicts the real models (heads), the enchanting ensembles which are ghost-like and the ballet dancers can be seen in the centre. How artistic!

Hats off to the best-dressed fashion crowd

Another one of my favourite outfits- the multi-coloured feather dress. Ready for take-off!

It was great to bump into the gorgeous Jess of What Would Karl Do, and our stylist friend, Melissa. Ah, my favourite Two Maidens.

The Last Dress

The Grand Finale

The stunning Micah Gianelli from Raww Blog

I wore my favourite Bento Hannah Blouse in Bloom, the Italian silk is stretchy and soft, this blouse literally go with everything! Stay tuned for more styling options with it :) I also wore my vintage Jenny Bannister leather skirt, wanted to debut it to show my support. The skirt is held together by Velcro!

Bento blouse/Jenny Bannister leather skirt/Mawi medallion necklace/Chloe Paddington pumps

What a night! I was so excited during the applauding that I dropped my ipod touch which I used to take notes on and have lost it  :(

Oh and I nearly forgot to mention what a fantastic time I had at ACMI watching the fashion films- I highly recommend all of them! My favourite was ‘Picture Me: A Model’s Diary’, it was so interesting to see the real-life account of an ex-model who was the face of campaigns and walked countless catwalks at Milan, Paris and New York Fashion Weeks, and a little sad to see the dark and exploitive side of the fashion industry…

And now, going to try to squeeze in some sleep before I work as a vet tomorrow, then going to the Forever New parade, and then a showing…
