Everyone is surprised when I tell them that I’m wearing Invisalign. Everyone, aside from those who’ve also had the invisible braces-alternative. Turns out I have at least 6 friends who currently have Invisalign too. But I never noticed!
“Wow I can’t tell at all!” “They really are invisible!” “I can’t believe they’re not braces!” are some common responses I get after apologizing for my ever so slight lisp.
As you know, I’m getting my orthodontic treatment from Smile Solutions. Melbourne’s Home of Dentistry is situated at the very top of the majestic Manchester Unity Building. Ten weeks into wearing Invisalign, I am a changed woman. I no longer snack, although I sure make up for it during meal times, and take dental hygiene seriously now.
Since many are curious about Invisalign, I thought I’d share some of the frequently asked questions I get about the treatment.
I am so used to the trays now I barely notice wearing them. Initially though, in the first week of wearing Invisalign, my front teeth were a little sore, as they are the ones requiring the straightening. I couldn’t bite into hard food (like apples or frozen cheesecake) but could still chew everything with my molars. Nowadays, they have literally become a part of me. Also at the start of the treatment, I salivated a bit, but thankfully after a few weeks, this ‘side effect’ has also subsided. I pretty much look and feel the same as before. How does Invisalign work?
You wear a new set of clear dental trays every fortnight which gradually shift your teeth into place. Each set differs from the previous ones ever so slightly. My orthodontist says that I won’t see noticeable changes to my teeth until 6 months into the treatment. So just a couple more months to go!
How has Invisalign changed your lifestyle?
Wearing Invisalign has forced me to kick my snacking habit in the butt. I used to eat all day long. But because Invisalign should be worn 22 hours a day (yes you wear them to sleep), I only take them off during meal times. So goodbye non-stop grazing, hello breakfast, lunch and dinner! After meals I try to brush my teeth and clean the trays whenever possible. My bag always has a toothbrush in it now.
You’re supposed to only drink water when wearing Invisalign, as tea and coffee will cause heat distortion and staining. But I have cheated by diluting green tea with a lot of cold water… and once I drank Champagne whilst wearing Invisalign. Needless to say, I gulped down a lot of water afterwards…

And the best thing about wearing Invisalign? It hasn’t stopped me from grinning from head to toe!
I know that some of you are considering getting Invisalign. Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer for you. xx
Good to hear your are going so well with your invisalign treatment! :) You really can’t see anything at all on your teeth, they ARE invisible. (I’m sure you’ll be tired of hearing that after the 6 months!)
Your printed jeans are so cute! I thought they were little Chihuahuas at first when this popped up in my feed reader :)
Thanks Mica. Yeah they really are invisible lol :D Ooh chihuahuas on jeans- now that’s another cute design!!
I also have invisalign! It’s been 6 months now, my teeth were pretty crooked before so now I can finally see them move into shape. To be honest your teeth look so straight already, but I know how you feel and want them to be just perfect.
I wish I got them done earlier. Also the only people that can tell I’ve got invisalign are people that have had it before. I cannot bear to think to have normal braces as I wouldn’t be able to deal with the food sticking and the chronic ulcers. Hope you’re well CC xo
That just shows how long we’ve not caught up! :D That’s so cool that you have Invisalign too. Yes definitely less scary than braces. Couldn’t put up with those side effects at our age :D My teeth were crooked enough to warrant them that’s for sure, and yeah I wish I got them earlier too!!!
Not to sound rude or anything, only curious, but are you sponsored by Smile Solutions/given free treatment or are you undertaking Invisalign out of your own pocket expenses and posting your journey?
Hi Jessie. I appreciate your inquiry and am happy to be transparent about this. I am paying for my Invisalign treatment myself. Smile Solutions has given a discount as contra payment for me to document my experience on the blog. I also have private health insurance that has covered a bit of the costs as well. I hope that answers your question. xx
Also wondering the same, did smile solutions endorse this post or provide any discounts?
Hi James, lovely to hear from you. Please see my reply to Jessie. Hope it answers your question xx
