Craving Cardona Bonache

by cecylia on September 28, 2011

I can only imagine your pupils dilate and the sheer amazement on your face when you see these pieces, because they are pretty much the same feelings I had when I laid eyes on this amazing collection, designed by Cardona Bonache. This is their 3rd collection, or ‘lesson’, as Mr Cardona and Mr Bonache calls. These photos were taken at Paris Fashion Week last year in September, when I went to visit the Felder Felder twins. This show room housed some seriously hip designers, Alexander Wang was on the floor below. Each season, the Spanish duo creates a collection based on a couture tailoring technique. They define, explore, and translate the idea, the technique into real wearable garments. For their SS11 collection, ‘Bellows‘, the boys created symmetrical pleats and folds and developed stiff and shiny fabrics which retained the bellows even when worn. In couture, a ‘bellow’ is a side fold consisting of 2 parallel fabric folds used to increase depth, its function is to create volume and generate movement in garments. I was so tempted to order the entire collection but in the end I chose the shoes- in cream. And I’ve been waiting for my shoes to arrive so I could post this up. But to this day, I am still waiting for them…Perhaps they have been forgotten, folded away, somewhere…

Outfit: vintage silk blouse, Karla Spetic wool skirt, Miu Miu jacket/dress, Jil Sander patent sandals.

How have you all been? I’ve been a little out of photographic action due to a viral assault, I promise as soon as I get better, I will get out and get some outfit photos for you. Until then, virtual hugs and kisses!

Sheer Exhibitionism

by cecylia on September 23, 2011

A few weeks ago I went to Premiere, Melbourne’s boutique trade show event for international and Australian labels at the Royal Exhibition Building. It reminded me so much of our previous buying trips to the City of Lights, I feel a little Paris-sick. This is why I wore my Vionnet heels (last seen here), one of longest-established French haute-couture houses that started back in the 20s by Madame Vionnet who transformed the way women dressed by rescuing them from their corsets into elegant bias-cut dresses (which she invented) that showed off their natural forms. She was dubbed “Queen of the bias cut” and “the architect among dressmakers“. I am so pleased that the couture House has been revamped by head designer Rodolfo Paglialunga and will do everything I can to support Vionnet. It is truly legendary!

Outfit: Twenty8 Twelve silk jacket, available here, vintage Citi blouse (see a similar one by Robert Rodriguez here), vintage Sporty Eight skirt, vintage earrings, bag and belt, Giuseppe Zannotti for Vionnet shoes. More Vionnet shoes (ON SALE) are available here :)

It was so great to catch up with the gorgeous Rebecca McGeoch, designer of Gasparre Cashmere. Her next winter luxe cashmere collection is so chic and wearable I cannot wait for AW12! Oh, poor Theodore wasn’t allowed in…how I wish that Melbourne could become more pet-friendly like Paris one day, soon!

Have an awesome weeekend y’all! I’m working as a vet on both Sat’day and Sunday and catching up with friends afterwards. To stay connected, come to my Facebook page and follow me on Twitter where I will tickle your fancy with adorable shenanigan updates. I promise.

 Adieu!

Q & A with Eva Q

by cecylia on February 28, 2011

I have crossed paths with talented Melbournian designer Eva Q a few times and have always been a fan of her decorative textiles and the sculptural elements in her designs. A graduate from Melbourne’s RMIT University, Eva won the NRA Australian Fashion Design Awards in 2009 and has also studied and worked in Paris. She was gracious enough to have an interview with me for my blog. Here she gives us a sneak peak into her latest AW11 collection and talks to us about Barbie dolls, Elie Saab and Audrey Tatou.

Eva, what inspired you to be a fashion designer?

I loved dressing up as a child. Even if I was going to the milk bar I would try on everything in my closet until I was satisfied with my coordinated outfit! I didn’t know that fashion design could be a potential career path for me until my mum started sewing samples for fashion designers like Alannah Hill. The fabrics, colours and designs were beautiful and mum gave me the left over fabric scraps to make clothes for my Barbie dolls. I guess it all started there. After that I started reading fashion magazines, sketching designs and slowly taught myself to cut and sew.

You won a scholarship to study in Paris, tell us what that like? What was the highlight?

Paris was incredible, the city is so beautiful and rich in inspiration, I loved every second of it. Our sewing lessons were taught by old school couturiers who were extremely strict. We learnt hat making from Jean Pierre Trizt who is Jean Paul Gaultier’s hat maker and our marketing and industry lecturer works for companies like Dior and YSL. It was information overload, probably the most intense time of my life. We were living in Paris but had to do homework on the weekends!
The highlight of my trip was meeting and working backstage at Elie Saab’s Haute Couture show, the experience made me want to make beautiful dresses every day of my life.

Where are your garments made?

All the garments are made by me in my studio. The label is still quite new so at the moment I can manage it on my own. I have some help from pattern makers and occasionally have some work experience students here to help me out with little things here and there.

What was your inspiration for your new collection?

The Winter colletion entitled ‘Solitude Concealed’ is inspired by a beautiful but mysterious woman who is afraid to break out from her lonely life. I used a lot of calming colours and kept the colour pallete quite subtle, with just the smallest highlight of silver.

What sort of lady do you design for?

Smart, sophisticated, feminine, and being beautiful without having to try too hard..women who invest in beautiful garments.

Who would you love to dress?

Audrey Tatou, I love her style. Chic, classy, feminine… gorgeous!

Who are your favourite designers?

Mademoiselle Chanel, Elie Saab, the Rodate girls, Sandra Backlund, I have so many favourite but they would be at the top of the list.

Thank you so much Eva for your time. I adore your designs, the last dress is my absolute favourite, I love how the lace overlay adds more femininity and mystery to this stunning frock. I would love to wear it to an event :)

Michelle Yeoh Alldressedup

by cecylia on February 23, 2011

Stunning actress Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies 007, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoires of a Geisha, Fearless, Babylon A.D) wearing an Alldressedup top for a press event with fellow film star Jet Li.

And with us in the Alldressedup show room in Paris. Love her jade ring/bracelet!
