White lights in the night and a Give-away!

by cecylia on January 27, 2012

You may recall in this post where I raved on about Melbourne eco-lovin’ designer Alex and his organic label SOSUME. (If you don’t, here it is again for ya). I was sent 2 Tees, grey and white. I actually love the white one more because of the cute pocket detail, but I wanted my readers to have the best one. Since youth my mother drummed into me that it’s better to give the best away. I can guarantee you that it will be softest Tee you’ve ever tried. So here’s a warning: you may never want to take it off…

To get you in the mood for a white weekend, here’s my latest take on the milky trend.

It used to be a joke amongst my friends that I should get a granny chain because of my forgetfulness and propensity to lose sunglasses. But recently a beaded glasses chain caught my eye at an op shop and its sheer beauty helped me erase the senility and taboo attached with it. It’s funny how time changes everything and trends can pleasantly surprise you like an anonymous love letter in the mail. The sunnies chain also doubles as a necklace!

Not sure if it’s because I’m attending 2 weddings within 3 days and since there’s no way I can wear white to these events, my rebellious nature has stimulated a desire to take the clean look to the streets. This year I’ve decided that I need to learn to adopt the Celine effect – embrace minimalism and instead of allowing clashed prints and bright colours always take centre stage, let the shapes and lines walk the talk. So if you also feel so inclined and love the colour white (yes it is a colour, ask any colourblind person), I’m giving you the opportunity to win the SOSUME white Vee Tee. All you need to do is share this post on your Facebook wall and Tweet it, and leave a comment below. Simple! The white winner will be announced Wednesday 8th Feb!

Have a wonderful weekend! Come chat if you miss me :) I’m ultra excited about a bestie’s wedding tomorrow. The theme is ‘Spring Runway’!

Where: After dinner at Abbotsford Convent

Wear: vintage earrings, dress and shoes, Pinkie the snail ring, Specsavers sunnies with vintage chain, vintage wrist clutch from eBay

Retail Shall Not Retire

by cecylia on October 31, 2011

Where do you shop? At a shopping centre, department store, boutique or on the internet?

As our lives become busier, time becomes scarce and patience become endangered, everyone is tempted to proceed to the checkout with their virtual shopping carts. Shopping on the internet has transformed from a dream, to a phenomenon (ask Natalie Massnet, founder of high-end online giant Net-a-Porter). To the consumer, online shopping is paradise, the goods are easy to find, the prices are competitive, check out is simple and delivery is fast. To retailers, online shops have become their worst nightmares.

Retailers and online stores are worlds-apart, mutually exclusive and as different as water and oil. Or are they? They may be on completely different platforms, however shops are shops, whether online or on the street, they will only be successful if they deliver a good experience to their customers.  Just as clarity, user-friendliness, and synchronization with technology are what boosts traffic and sales on an online store; honesty, integrity and exceptional customer service are key ingredients to a success retail store wishing to attract repeat customers. Both online and physical stores could easily incorporate fast delivery and utilise social media to promote their businesses.

Something going in favour of retail stores is that human beings are creatures of interaction, craving real human connection, this is why despite being in partnership with the latest gadgets (think apps for iphones and ipads) even e-commerce stores hold events, organise parties and develop Pop-up stores to give their customers a real life experience. Retail shops have a chance to triumph if they employ friendly, helpful and informative staff which become their assets. Staff is the fragrance that either attracts or repulses customers. Retailers should also train their staff to know the core values of their business as well as the latest products and trends so that they can outdo a computer screen. After all, online stores will never match what retailers can offer – that real customer service and rapport which brings repeat sales.

Successful online and retail shops need to embrace each other’s strengths and learn to adapt these winning characteristics into their own businesses to ensure that their customers are having a good shopping experience, online or in the store.

Many of you know that I am an avid supporter of independent small businesses (as I used to run one myself and each day challenged myself to give customers the best service possible). Here are the boutiques I adore, because I am usually greeted, welcomed, served, styled, educated by the owner and Theodore is allowed in! I would like to introduce you to 3 of my favourite luxurious stores in Melbourne who takes retail to the next level:

  • Madam Virtue & Co – for the stylish lady who is well-read, well-travelled and well-heeled. Boutique owners Dean and JC has the largest array of hand-made couture dresses in Melbourne, along with a myriad of European darling designers such as Lanvin, YSL, Chanel, Hermes. They have a bespoke tailoring service and a gorgeous SharPei named Maude. You may recall my last shopping experience with them here.

  • Peony Melbourne- Haute Parfumerie, THE place for decadently unique and artisan perfumes that transports you into another ear, another realm. The beautiful home of nearly 30 fragrance and candle labels including Annick Goutal, Cire Trudon, Fragonard, Ladurée and Rancé 1795, just to name a few. Peony also houses the perfume exclusively created for Marie Antoinette, the long-awaited (yes a 200 years waiting list) ‘Black Jade’ by Lubin. Owner Jill, who is like a walking fragrance encyclopedia, is both charming and patient, one could spend a whole day with her learning about the history and compositions of all the fragrances.

  • Miles Mason Trading Company – lovely boutique specialising in beautiful yet quirky gifts and home-wares the for eco-conscious. Owner Charlotte selects environmentally-friendly, affordable and made-in-Melbourne products for her customers. Look out for the  Melbourne-based organic skincare range GROWN, wooden animal boxes, beautiful soy candles and intriguing Distortion candle sticks.

I was fortunate to visit both Peony Melbourne and Miles Mason last week, there I stocked up on delicious candles and delightful moisteurisers. Here are the photographic evidence of my spoils! Visit these lovely stores for real personal customer service and an unforgettable shopping experience.

Clockwise from top left: GROWN face moisteriser and eye cream (Miles Mason Trading Company)/Sample of Black Jade perfume by Lubin/Hand-written card from Jill/Astier de Villatte CAMBRIDGE‘/Carriere Freres Industrie candles, all from Peony Melbourne

I am all about the experience, the sensuous, the tactile, the thought-provoking, and the liberty to try things on. I love learning about new designers, labels, collections and products. And the stores that provide us with that experience deserves all of our rapport and support.

Jump To It

I have saved this Spijkers en Spijkers jumpsuit to wear at RAFW, it is one of my favourite onesies. The Dutch sisters made me this wool jumpsuit especially because our boutique got it in black, but I still think the caramel rocks. It looks amazing with a puss-bow blouse underneath, next time! I teamed it with a wool Chloe jacket I bought from theOutnet, my Sonia Rykiel pumps and a vintage bag (for the ipad). Wearing MAWI necklace and ring, also seen here.

Seeing Leeyong from Style Wilderness and Phoebe, aka Lady Melbourne brought sunshine to my morning, for Day 4 of RAFW. ‘Tis good to see Melbournians in Sydney! Leeyong is one of the most creative ladies I have ever met. She made her earrings, to see how, see here. She made the fringe wrap around her shoes herself from her leather skirt! From one clever beauty to the other, Lady Melbourne is the epitome of chic with her beige and blue ensemble. I joked with her saying that her ankle support strap is actually really cute, I would wear the pair in black! So we laughed about rushing to the pharmacist and pretend that we have sprained both of f our ankles.

I met veteran blogger Helen from Sassy Bella from Day One, but only now I got a chance to be photographed with her. She always has a crowd around her. Her two toned shoes are super super sweet!

Another lady I was trying to get a hold of all week at Rosemount was the Fashion Editor of the Age, Janice BreenBurns. Judging by her tweets, I knew she was here in Sydney, but it was only a visit to backstage to say ‘Happy Birthday’ to the Talented Miss Yeojin Bae, that I got to catch up with Janice. She was busy interviewing Yeojin about her show-stopping collection.

By the 4th day of RAFW, I had nearly finished up with my buying appointments so had more time to hang out with my friends and meet new blogger friends. Here is Joelyne, The Sydney Girl, in her insanely hot leather skirt. But I know that you are admiring her pink socks! J’adore! I am featured in this post of hers. Her pictures are much better than mine. It was such a pleasure to photograph all the fashion elites and to introduce myself to them. My favourite response from them was not ‘Oh I love your _____’, it was’ Oh I’ve heard of your blog!’ That made my week.

Thank you so much for reading my blog and for following my peculiar life. As far as I know, there is no other vet out there who has branched into fashion like I have. I have been incredibly blessed to be given all these amazing opportunities. And if you are a vet who has opened her boutique, let me know! It’s been an absolute pleasure sharing my experiences and adventures with you. It makes me smile knowing that you are reading. And hopefully you are smiling too.

I’m wearing: Spijkers en Spijkers wool jumpsuit (available in black from our boutique), Chloe jacket, Mawi necklace and ring (available here), Viktor & Rolf silk bracelet, Sonia Rykiel pumps, vintage shades and bag

Next up: my fascination with metals and hair

Get ready for MSFW!

by cecylia on August 6, 2010

The weather is freezing. The streets are wet and I still have my winter kilos on me. The only signs of spring coming up around the corner are the sheer flowing flags of a beautiful Lucy McIntosh, the Face of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. The ads are a little reminiscent of Abbey Lee Kershaw for Gucci’s Flora campaigns.

I was invited to attend the media launch at the Town Hall earlier in the week  to see the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle speak and introduce to the public both the gorgeous Face and the cool Ambassador. Who else best personifies Melbourne style than Melbourne-bred It-Girl Ruby Rose?  Both Lucy and Ruby are beautiful and articulate, and I applaud the committee’s selections. Here are some photos to get you into the blooming mood..

Lucy will be opening and closing a series of the designer runway shows. I’ve already booked for the 2nd show! Cannot wait!!! Lucy looks a dream in a Toni Maticevski dress and jewels from Shag.  She is not just a pretty face, she also has an enviable body and is very eloquent as well. Lucy is recently engaged to Black Eyed Peas DJ Poet, she is actually in search for a wedding dress that will be beautiful and unique enough for her. I’m guessing she will be eyeing Collette Dinnigan and Lisa Ho’s collection very carefully. But she did mention that she would prefer a non-traditional dress, maybe a futuristic Arnsdorf piece?

Ruby’s dress is made by an RMIT student Jack Loder, which you may have already read about in the Monday 2nd August edition of MX. Man, we have some talented emerging young designers in the making! Even Ruby herself is starting her own label. She will be presenting and DJ’ing for the after parties. Is it just me, or has she gotten a lot skinnier?

Another garment that deserves special mention is Shoona’s blue jacket, also made by an RMIT student, Jess Slade. I cannot wait to see the student series catwalk! I love Shoona’s necklace as well!

Sarah – Dhini dress and Etro jacket from Christine

Shoona – Gorman dress, jacket by RMIT student, Jess Slade

Lucy McIntosh – dress: Toni Maticevski, accessories – Shag

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle

Ruby Rose – dress RMIT Student, Jack Loder

Emily – Gorman dress, Akira jacket, Akira leggings

Nerdia – Arnsdorf dress

Luke – Arthur Galan AG

I was lucky to meet the talented stylist Connel Chiang, (you can read more about him here) who created such a bright, colourful and youthful mixture of florals and patterns. He is wearing some silk rose rings from Christine, who was also present at the launch. And I bumped into the beautiful Sarah, of Sarah Style Emporium.

I also befriended 2 lovely fashionistas: Erin, who works for the Herald Sun, and Bronny, of the fabulous online stylist site http://askbronny.com/. I loved their jackets and Erin’s silk top!

Ah…now I just have to get out of my winter flab and slip into something more stylish for the shows. Cannot wait for the 30th August! It will be my first time attending MSFW whole-heartedly. Even though you cannot compare MSFW to London, Paris or Milan Fashion Weeks, MSFW can be my warm-up before I head off to Europe later in the year =)

Who else is going? We should dine together or sit like a front-rower in the back rows together! Don’t forget to doll up and bring your camera! Let me know which shows you’re going to!

love

Cecylia
