Looking back on my old graduation photos, it seems like a lifetime ago that I graduated and commenced my career as a vet. Even though studying to be a vet was tough, I knew that I wasn’t done learning. There’s a saying in Chinese that my parents drilled into me when I was young: “you never stop learning as long as you live“.
I was recently discussing with a friend about her career change, from lawyer to restaurateur, and my double life as a veterinarian and fashion blogger. For years I’ve been swapping smelly scrubs covered in pet hair with silky cocktail frocks in the back of the car between jobs. We’ve both taken some pretty big leaps of faith to be able to do what we love, but we both still want to keep honing our skills to make sure that we’re equipped for the amazing adventures that the future will hold. Even after embarking on my new, lifelong “career” of motherhood, I’ve been watching vet webinars, signing up for online courses, reading novels (I can’t get Pride & Prejudice out of my head!), playing the piano more, and eyeing off some units at Open Universities Australia (OUA).
I was stoked to be introduced to Open Universities Australia because it provides online education to those who desire a job change or simply want to learn more. It is designed to be flexible enough to fit each student’s lifestyle and needs. Plus, it has many great support services to help students during their studies, including a dedicated student hub, student support and counselling as well as Fee Help options. Although there are quite a few units that take my fancy, I’d love to learn about nutrition (Nutrition, Health & Disease via RMIT). You know how much I love food and this unit would teach me to make better food choices for my new family.
Perhaps you’ve long considered a career change too, or you just want to keep learning as long as you live. Why not surprise the world? Surprise yourself! Who knows? Perhaps Open Universities Australia could help you realise your dreams.
Hi Cecylia
What a lovely post! I work as an actuary but my real passion is in managing the charity I founded,Oz Fair Trade, to make real differences in people’s lives through fair trade. I know how you feel :)
[…] used to think that learning new things was reserved for young people, but since my epiphany, expressed in this post, I want to learn new things every day. Whether it is a new word, a new recipe, a new route, or even […]
