Athens-born Sophia Kokosalaki, studied literature at the University of Athens before she realised that fashion design was more of her passion than journalism and headed to London to complete an MA at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1998. This may have been the influence of her mother who frequently dolled her up in ‘horrible little dresses’ which resulted in her wanting to create her own designs. Her signature style features handcrafted elements fused with classic Grecian draping. Kokosalaki is renowned for her soft flowing dresses, and innovative work with leather and knitwear. Her most impossibly soft silk knitwear and butter-soft leather dresses with her trademark ‘lyre’ zip detailing captivated countless clients at my boutique. Her show was the very first I’d attended at Paris Fashion Week and I was awestruck. It was no wonder Kokosalaki was chosen to design the opening and closing ceremonial outfits for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Kokosalaki spent a brief stint as Creative Director of Vionnet in 2006 but she resigned to concentrate on her own label. In 2009 she became the Creative Director of Diesel Black Gold and launched her highly-anticipated Bridal line in January 2012.
