Irish-born Pauric Sweeney designs unique and modern bags in luxury Italian leathers and exotic skins thanks to his skills as a trained architect. Having owned his own fashion boutique and gallery in London in the 90s, Sweeney started designing jewellery, and before you knew it, he debuted his first ready-to-wear collection at London Fashion Week in 2001 to much acclaim. He told me when I visited his showroom in Paris in 2010 that it was his friend Suzy Menkes (International Herald Tribune) that made the suggestion after seeing his runway show that he should focus on bag design. Her advice was gold. Sweeny’s exquisitely crafted bags with clean and charming aesthetics have earned him a formidable celebrity following. He now has three lines: Pauric Sweeney, Pauric by Pauric, and Sweeney (for men). He has worked with Raf Simons at Jil Sander as the Creative Director of Accessories, collaborated with Rei Kawakubo (Comme Des Garcons), and designed for international department store Lane Crawford. Sweeney lives in Florence with his son Oscar.
Meeting Pauric Sweeney at this showroom in Milan in 2010. I couldn’t put this tote/backpack bag down.
