One of my most admired Australian designers is Karla Špetić. Having escaped the civil war in Dubrovnik, Špetić left Croatia at the tender age of 11 to start a new life in Sydney. Both her nostalgic memories of the past as well as her quick adaptation of the present serve as influences in her ever-dreamy and yet refined designs. Only two years after graduating from the Sydney Fashion Design Studio, Špetić launcher her label in 2008 at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Having worked previously as a freelance patternmaker it is no wonder she has honed the ability to create minimalist cuts with complex details as well as detailed cuts that appear simple. In all her collections, Špetić strike a perfect balance in contrasts such as past and present, masculine and feminine, structure and silhouette. In 2009, Špetić was nominated as a finalist in the Best Up and Coming Designer category at the Prix de Marie Claire awards. Renowned for her uniquely modern and romantic swimwear, thanks to her happy childhood memories around the Adriatic Sea, Špetić launched her new swimwear line KS Swim in 2012.
