The beautiful and humble Kathryn Beker (pronounced ‘Beaker’) is the fashion designer-to-watch and in my opinion, an angel in disguise. Heralding from Toronto in Canada, Beker has completed a stint in Paris and then completed a BA with Honours from Melbourne’s RMIT. After interning and working for a number of prominent Australian labels, Beker launched her flourishing label in 2010. She was a finalist in Italy’s annual International Talent Support competition for her innovative capsule collection and the Young Designer of the Year Award in 2012. Beker’s collections are not trend-driven. They embody her sound understanding of art movements and couture techniques, all interpreted in a contemporary read-to-wear form. She is just as adroit with the bias cut as she is with masculine tailoring. Her fabrics range from silks and wool to Ostrich feathers and leathers. The Kathryn Beker lady is sensual, confident and cultural, and is not afraid to make a strong yet elegant statement.
