Think Inside the Square

by cecylia on October 28, 2011

Recently Melbourne Central invited me to select 5 favourite Spring Racing accessories from a myriad of their amazing boutiques, to be featured in ‘The Accessory Cube’, a Pop-Up store to get us Races-ready. Spring Racing fashion isn’t just about the dress, the emphasis is on the entire ensemble. And as we all know, the right accessories can dramatically up the style ante. I had a ball choosing the pieces but it was no easy feat, I felt like a judge at Fashion Stakes! After much wandering around the centre and deciding, I am proud to announce these favourites:

  1. Tilkah multi-strand bracelet- the 3 pretty summer colours (turquoise, clear and apricot) ensure it match nearly every outfit you have, and you won’t want to take it off as the weather warms up and your tan darkens
  2. Fame Agenda pastel pink leather belt with gold hardware – the perfect belt for a dress, a flawless balance between dainty and edgy, and only $60!
  3. Melissa Lady Dragon glittery heels – a design collaboration by British fashion doyenne Vivienne Westwood, high-end designer with an affordable price tag, plus these are uber comfy so you can last longer on your feet, and in case Melbourne weather doesn’t behave you don’t have to cry over soiled leather, you can just go home and wash them.
  4. Thurley acrylic hard-case sphere bag (comes with a shoulder chain)- again, water resistant and utter eye candy. My jaw hit the ground when I saw this bag. Plus you can practise bowling with it.
  5. Vintage Rose bouquet head piece, from Olrik – a floral fascinator is the epitome of chic in spring and is guaranteed to turn heads, all for the right reasons.

Melbourne Central is offering their visitors a chance to win the accessories by simply uploading a picture of your favourite accessory from the Cube onto their Facebook page. What an amazing offer! Visit the Pop up store for more details.

The black dress I’m wearing may seem familar to you, and that’s because it’s a Miss Lyndel Yeo dress I wore with a vintage thermometer in this post.

As you know, I am an accessories-fanatic, I was the buyer of my boutique, and was blessed to come 3rd in the Caulfield Chadstone Fashion Stakes (see here), so you can rest assured that I picked the creme de la creme accessories from Melbourne Central for you.

Visit The Accessory Cube on Level 2, available until 6th November 2011. Have a beautiful weekend everyone, especially those of you attending Derby Day. I won’t be at the Races unfortunately, I have to work at the vets. Happy snapping and happy shopping!

Candidly at Caulfield Cup

by cecylia on October 17, 2011

You may have seen from my Facebook updates lately that I’ve been so blessed to attend the 2011 BMW Caulfield Racing Carnival. I’ve never been to the Races before so you can imagine my excitement and gratitude when I was invited to join the Pegasus Club marquee in ultra fine company with fellow bloggers, stylists, models, actors and TV celebrities. I tried to adhere to the Races dress-code of wearing a knee-length frock which covered my shoulder(s), a head piece, a clutch and heels. Of course I put a quirky and eclectic spin to the ‘typical’ Races dress code and opted for this neon yellow Roksanda Ilincic dress, which apparently was previously worn by Ginnifer Goodwin to Comic-Con 2011. I bought it as a sample from the designer (as I’m supporting Buy Nothing New October). Roksanda didn’t send me the H-shaped feather belt piece, but I had an even more special brooch given to me by my fashion mentors Dean and JC of Madam Virtue to wear.

The  exquisite Lady Melbourne, in vintage and self-made hat and bangles

Phoebe’s self-made pearl bangles, I’m sporting Australian designers Paula Walden piano ring and Estelle Deve cuff

Sarah (Style Melbourne), Ben, Phoebe and I at the Pegasus Club, my head piece kept falling off because I washed my hair and couldn’t find bobby pins to lock it in, so I kept taking it off and putting it on. Here I am sporting it back to front without realising it!

Josh Koko & Phillip Boon, celebrity stylist, looking as sharp as ever

My first-time entering the Chadstone’s Fashion Stakes. I had no idea that the competition involved walking, I thought we just stood on the stage and the judges marked us. My jaw dropped as I found out that we actually have to strut…

I tried my best and was so thankful that I didn’t fall over and had moved from my Heat into the Finals. With gorgeous ladies waiting to be judged.

The 3 finalists from Caulfield Guineas Day, Laura is demure in black and white, adore her heels! Joanne reminds me of Grace Kelly in her beautiful YeoJin Bae dress. I look so bland next to these beautiful ladies, note to self: must wear make-up next week!

After the competition, we were interviewed by the Runner Up of the Face of Caulfield, Maggie, about our inspirations for our outfits. I described mine as ‘a highlighter’.

Bree, the Face of Caulfield, in Gorman, Giaan Rooney, the Ambassador of the Caulfield Races, in Perri Cutten. These ladies are simply sublime!

Last Saturday was the Caulfield Cup, I was ordered to wear the exact same outfit as I’ve been lucky enough to be in the Grand Final for the Chadstone Fashion Stakes, so I apologize for boring you with the same outfit. I learnt from my mistakes from the previous week at Guineas Day so I asked my bestie Vicki to do my make-up and had my head piece properly fitted, by the gorgeous Peter from Salon M. I compeltely forgot to practise my walk though…

My fair lady: Sarah of Style Melbourne

The ever so stylish Phillip Boon, celebrity stylist, in vintage Pierre Cardin

Bloggers Adrian Fernand of I Do Belive I Came With a Hat, Sarah and Luke of D’Marge. Told you I was in fine company. To my stylish male readers, do yourself a favour and check out these boys’ blogs!

Lady Melbourne and I, again in a self-made hat. This girl has style from head to toe.

Anna Mott, of Racing Fashion Victoria, the most amicable and glamorous personality I’ve ever met. Her dazzling couture headpiece is created by the incredibly handsome Brett Morley. I am in love with Anna’s Alexander McQueen silk clutch!

The most stylish couple: Ren and Christian of Style Sage!

Georgia Sinclair, DJ of the Pegasus Club, in Miu Miu shades and Missoni dress

Phillip and Bree, the Face of Caulfield, ladylike and classy. I think together, we have mastered colour-blocking.

Ambassador of the 2011 BMW Caulfield Carnival, Giaan Rooney, such a stunning lady.

The grand Finals of the Fashion Stakes wasn’t until the end of the day. As the hour approached, more butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Nervousness and excitement infiltrated my veins.

Just smile and walk straight and don’t let your head piece fall…

It was a surreal moment when the hosts called out my number, ’4′. I was so honoured to attend the Chadstone Fashion Stakes and to be amongst so many gorgeous ladies, many of which were more deserving of my title. I was stoked to have been awarded 3rd place ’2nd Runner Up’ in the competition. I never thought I would have come thus far. A huge Thank You to Melbourne Racing Club and Style Counsel for having me, to everyone who eased my nerves with your loving, encouraging words and well-wishes, to Sally (Styled by Sally) for lending me her Chanel nail polish, to Vicki for making me look awake, Salon M for fitting my fascinator, to Dean and JC for my beautiful feather brooch and to the judges for being so kind to me. I feel immensely humbled and intensely privileged.

The Caulfield Races has been an experience of a lifetime for me, from the delicious courses at the Ladies luncheons to feeling the adrenaline rush watching the horses race and seeing so many stunningly dressed Race-goers, I have been blown away by the abundance of elegance, extravagance, and ambience!

Sorry to sound like a dork, but out of all the amazing prizes, I’m most excited about my one year subscription to The Age! Hopefully it will improve my morning routine making me rise earlier, eat breakfast and increase my little knowledge of the world.

So that was my weekend, not short of epic. Hope yours was wonderfully charged with love and joy too!

His: H&M hat, Country Road suit, Coton Doux shirt, Vivienne Westwood tie, Arabella Ramsay pocketchief, Jil Sander shoes

Hers: Paula Walden Bow headpiece, vintage earrings, Roksanda Ilincic silk gazar dress, Madam Virtue feather brooch, Paula Walden piano ring, Estelle Deve cuff, vintage clutch, Chloe heels

It’s Tux Time

by cecylia on July 15, 2011

Hi folks! Did you like the RAFW looks in the 2 previous posts? There are so many fashionistas in this country! I wish we all dressed up everyday and not just during fashion week. It’s been a while since I’ve done an outfit post, so here’s one to tickle your fancy!

I squealed with delight when my Outnet package arrived a few weeks ago, containing 2 highly anticipated Alexander Wang dresses. Recently sleeveless jackets have been on my wish-list because they are so versatile and add professional edginess to anything you throw underneath, shirts, Tees, jumpers, you name it. Loving the polished look right now.

I found this amazing silk shirt with musical instruments on it at the local op-shop and could not wait to take it out for a spin. There are French horns on the shirt and to let you in a little secret, I used to play the French horn…10 years ago now! The Max Mara cashmere cape and the YSL belt were souvenirs from Milan. I love shopping overseas as every piece I collect there serve as the perfect reminder of the beautiful memories from that city. The brooch was found in a vintage shop in Switzerland, it was originally designed to hold capes together. The pyramid ring is by one of my favourite Australian jewellery designers, Paula Walden. You would have seen my ‘Hip to be Square’ ring in the last picture of this post, these rings are from the same collection. I am seriously in love with her pieces.

I was very lucky to have a weekend off, a very rare thing in my life. So hubby and I took Theodore to a nearby park to shoot these photos for you. I found this cute grey coat from the RSPCA op-shop for Theodore, it’s hand-made with love. Theodore is not a fan of it as he doesn’t like to play dress ups, something he did not inherit from his mother…

Thank you Alexander Wang for designing this amazing jacket dress, the best thing about it is that the pockets are made from stretch-silk! Yes I’m very attention-to-detail. I hope you are all having a gorgeous week. Thank you once again for reading my blog, for following and for commenting. I love our cyber space relationship. So, do you come here often?

If you like this look, please ‘love’ it here. Have a delicious weekend!

Outfit: Vintage shirt, brooch, clutch, Alexander Wang dress, MaxMara cape, Lanvin heels, Paula Walden and Vivienne Westwood rings

Always wear expensive shoes. People notice.

by cecylia on August 15, 2010

Lately I’ve been splurging and now have no money for food. That’s what 2 pairs of Lanvin heels, a pair of pumps from Sonia Rykiel, some Miu Miu shoes, a Net-a-Porter order, a Preen leather dress, a Ralph Lauren jacket, an Amy Kaehne cape and some Basso & Brook leggings brings you to: D-E-B-T.

Me and shopping are now officially on a break. But before I did, I also sneaked in a pair of Diana Broussard shoes from LuisaViaRoma, the  luxury online store from Florence, whilst they had an extra 20% off already reduced stock. It was a miracle that I got these shoes in my size!

These lattice shoes remind me of the famous YSL cage heels, but will get have more ladies guessing. I looked up Diana Broussard, she has quite an impressive CV. The American shoe designer’s label was launched in 2001. Diana has worked with all the big guns, such as Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, alongside John Galliano and also with Gucci. I love the big heels on these Italian-made shoes. Big heels usually mean longer wear.

This is the day I received the heels at the boutique, I’m wearing the Karla Spetic Maxine top, my favourite vintage jacket (I’ve had it for over a decade!), vintage pants and vintage jewelry and some Miss Sixty pumps, also Italian shoes.

Here’s a closeup of my accessories. The pendant on my necklace was a flea-market find from Paris, the mother-of-pearl bangle was a flea-market find from Zurich (you can see a closer-up picture here), and the skull ring was a recent purchase (also on sale) from Net-a-Porter. I actually bought a pair of Marc Jacobs tweed flats and Marni gold heels as well as the ring but the shoes didn’t fit my irregular feet so sadly I had to return them. *sobs*

I wish I had bought the medium sized ring so I can wear it on my middle finger…but that’s the joy of internet shopping.

Here is a close up of my Vivienne Westwood gold plated bone ring. I love the juxtaposition of the prettiness and the rawness. It also reminds me that all living things come to an end, so make the most of every day. Sorry, that was a little deep…

Here are the new additions to my footwear family. I will try to wear them soon, otherwise they will join the likes of my other shoes, sitting quietly in their boxes on the bookshelf.

Brian Koslow, the founder and CEO of Breakthrough Coaching Inc. once said “Always wear expensive shoes. People notice. ‘ And they sure do.

I’ve decided to stop shopping online for now, because there is nothing better than being able to feel the fabrics (you know how anal I am with me and my fabrics) and trying items on, because of my irregular shape. Don’t get me wrong, I am still addicted to LuisaViaRoma, Net-a-Porter and Outnet, but I seem to lose all sense of direction and self-control when I catch a glimpse of gorgeous shoes, for example, check out these Dsquared’s

A girl can never have too many shoes. After all, they are what gets us noticed.
