A post for Jo

by cecylia on August 12, 2010

One day I decided to capture the sunset sky with some recent favourites from my closet.  I wanted to dedicate this post to my best friend Jo in the UK. I haven’t seen her since Paris Fashion Week, when we attended Sophia Kokosalaki’s show together. Despite being over 8000 miles away, she still calls me from thousands of miles away and writes to me in between her busy work and travel schedules. She has lived away from Melbourne for over 6 months now and probably has forgotten how Australian fauna looks like in the winter sun.

I’m geared up in a Claude Maus Merino dress with my Felder Felder Daphne coat (also seen here), grey tights which have served me well over the years but are nearly the end of their era; peeptoe booties, a vintage fish necklace and a Natalia Brilli sea urchin necklace. I also bought a larger one in grey. She is one of my favourite avant-garde accessories designers, a master (mistress?) of coating anything and everything in the softest lambskin. Fingers crossed I can stock her in the future…

A little blurred, am I still in your memory

This photo reminds me of a very famous song (almost ad nauseum) which have the lyrics of

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all this pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast
And they’re gone so fast
So hold on to the ones who really care
In the end they’ll be the only ones there
When you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?

Guess who wrote this?

I never thought much of these words as a teen, but now that I’m older, I finally understand what the Hanson brothers were singing about.

There are so many ‘best friends’ who rarely keep in touch, no matter how hard you try… Are we just going to let our ‘busy schedules’ stunt the growth of our friendships?

If you haven’t seen your best friends for a while, call them, email them, Facebook them, Tweet them. Tell them that you care about them. Don’t let them become a blur in the depths of your mind.

Momento from Lenko

Lenko!

Lenko!

As I lazily trekked my way around the Melbourne CBD one day, I entered one of my favourite shopping sites: the Cathedral Arcade. In this small hide-out are some of my favourite destinations: Alice Euphemia, Retro Star (the best vintage shop in the city, on the 1st floor) and Genki. Suddenly some brightly-coloured walls with all sorts of funny paintings caught my attention. Another shop has overtaken Genki! To my pleasant surprise, it’s Lenko! I have been a fan of the cute label since its humble beginnings in a student Design studio shop in Melbourne Central. Lenko makes the cutest toys and the funniest T-shirts. They are all very tongue-in-cheek, eccentric and humorous.

I walked in, introduced myself to who I think is actually in fact the founder of Lenko: Dana! Dana is simply gorgeous. She is so down-to-earth and friendly (and wished not to appear in my photos, but I sneaked a side-shot). Dana used to study film studies but she ended up being a fashion designer and now has her own quirky shop! I am so envious, she is living my dream! =)

Don’t you love the funny wall murals? Dana painted them! There are gorgeous garments by fellow designers for both men and women. There are quirky accessories – brooches, badges, necklaces, rings, earrings, bags, shoes, so many fun things! Dana showed me her favorite T-shirt, it was a white T with all these most famous lines from movies on it making it into a non sequitur prose, followed by the very last “P.S. I see dead people.”

One of the cute Lenko T shirts had a telephone and a love heart. It read ‘These days, even phones are getting engaged.’

I bought myself a little souvenir from there- a white Yeti badge. It came wrapped in a silver foil tray, like food!

I haven’t worn it yet but it brings a smile upon my face every time I see it!

Dana actually hand-made this orange monster. This is one of the last toys she’s made. They’re becoming extinct! Lenko supports many local talents as well as other Australian designers who are now based overseas. Pay Dana a visit and check out Lenko!
