Riding with Ralph

by cecylia on September 19, 2010

Recently I attended some friends’ wedding. A few of us sang a John Rutter song called ‘As the Bridegroom to His Chosen’ for the couple. It was a beautiful day and here are some piccies from the reception.

I wore my Ralph Lauren jacket, my birthday present, for the first time; and my one-shouldered wool Cesare dress from Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, also for the first time. The necklace and belt are vintage. The Omero polka dot stockings are from the boutique because my cheapo nylon ones which were brand new ripped when I tried to pull them up. And you would have seen these butterfly booties from Marc Jacobs already here.

I wore this outfit to work. It was a hectic day. The wedding was in the middle of the day after which I had to return back to work at the boutique. After the store closed I attended my friend Cupcake Central’s shop opening, and then dashed off to the wedding reception.

I caught up with some friends. Mei (left) is such a fashionable lady. She’s the one with the Chloe shoes. The puffy Juicy Couture dress and YSL gold necklace is hers as well. She’s a big Net-a-Porter and Outnet shopper.

Here’s a close-up of our shoes. Which ones’ your favourite?

Can you believe this? Another 7 pairs of our friends are getting married in the 2nd half of the year! There are 4 in October but I will miss 3 of them because of our buying trip, but I will make it up to them when I get back =)

SHOEvenirs from Hong Kong

by cecylia on June 11, 2009

Be prepared. I am about to show you 3 spectacular souvenirs that gave our credit card a heavy workout in Hong Kong last year. I admit. I splurged. But not as much as I would have if I bought my Chloe, YSL and Repetto shoes at full price. I was very lucky on my 3 day trip to HK to end up on the very top (13th) floor of the Times Square Building – the Times Square Bazaar – for the Pedder Warehouse sale. My inside sources told me that there had been designer shoe, bag and clothing (eg, Salvatore Ferragamo)  sales there in the past. We were on the top floor, but the prices were rock bottom! I was totally unaware of the unparalleled shopping experience I was about to encounter.

Wait for it…There were shoes (the hippest labels from to Givenchy to Giuseppe Zanotti) from every fabulous designer you could dream of, arranged in size order, at up to 80% off RRP. YES 80% OFF! Where else could you get them at that price? They also had a deal – the more items you bought, the more discount you received. Did I forget to mention that there were Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Marni and so many other designer bags also on sale?

High-end bargain hunting

Yes, I drooled, many times.  Yes, I managed to still give style advice to other ladies while carrying out my own shoe triage. And yes, my heart skipped a beat each time I saw a pair that I adored, in my size, ready to be tried on by me. When I put on the graffiti-design Louboutin flats with the signature red-lacqured soles, I felt like Cinderella eagerly trying on her glass slipper. Time did stop for a few hours while my Gingko-biloba-deficient brain tried to act as a calculator, working out currency conversion rates as well as discount schemes. I looked at my husband lovingly with a dozen pairs of lust-haves (which I claimed to be must-haves), and he had a look that told me he wished that we had lost our credit card.

It was one of the most difficult selection processes I’ve had to carry out: I had to narrow down my purchases to 3- the 3 I would definitely wear, the 3 that flattered me and the 3 that would stand the test of time…So I chose the pair with the greatest saving, the pair that I’ve yearned for a while, and the pair that my hubbie chose.  See if you can match which pair is which =)   All three pairs of shoes have leather upper, leather lining and leather soles.  Try saying that really fast.

Repetto ballet flats: the best ballet flats on the market. Exquiste craftsmanship, luxury inside-out. Repetto is the epitome of French chic.

Next are some grey/black leather YSL pumps featuring patent leather tips and wooden cylindrical heels.  I’ve worn them once and they were so comfortable that I could run in them.  When I was trying these on, I also helped a stylish lady next to me buy a pair of the same shoes in half a size up.  The two-tone shoes are a classic, and the wood-grain heels are a surprising and modernising feature.  Grey is my favourite colour!

And the lucky third pair- my red peep-toe Mary-Jane Chloes in buttery soft leather. They are an architectural piece also featuring wooden heels in a sumptuous colour. Thanks to their great heights I feel like a model in them.

Have you guessed which pair is which? Which one did I buy because my husband liked them, which one did I buy because they were the best value and which pair did I buy because I’ve always been a fan?

Now guess which pair is taller.  (HINT: not the ballet flats)

It’s a tough one!

These three pairs of shoes are what all real shoes should be like – the absolute best quality, craftsmanship and style – that’s why they became my treasured SHOEvenirs from Hong Kong.

Window Dressing

by cecylia on June 6, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of fancy window displays. Most of the fine pieces in my wardrobe were purchased on a whim when I saw how chic they looked on the mannequins. Even if the clothes didn’t quite have the same effect on my less-than-perfect figure, they were already ‘sold’ in my head when I cast my eyes upon them. Most of us are visual learners and retailers know the huge impact good window dressing is to boost their client traffic and sales.

I was in Hong Kong last year, (yes at Times Square, again), drooling over the beautiful designer goods. And it is with my greatest  pleasure to present some fine window dressing displayed by…..

                      JUICY COUTURE

img_0111

Don’t you love the juxtapositioning of the period dressing with the modern silhouette? I love the pink vinyl bag in the lady’s hand! Back in the 18th century, she would have been carrying a silk handkerchief or a frilly parasol.

img_0116

What do you get when you drown a terra cotta soldier in baby-pink paint? The Juicy Knight! Look! He has a belly and is he wearing a trilby? How could anyone resist photographying him? After I got a sneak snapshot of him, the shop assistant dashed out in the middle of serving a customer and prohibited me from taking photos! I was mortified. Shouldn’t he be honored that I am so appreciative of art and fashion?

Eye candy for pink lovers. I actually only like the legless female mannequin on her side. Her big frilly colour is reminiscent of the ‘ruff’ (stiff collar, usually white) from 17th century. Her hyperreflective tunic dress is just as eye-catching.

The following photos were taken from Hong Kong designer shops, I have forgotten their names.

I love the bowed red Sonia-Rykiel-like wool jumper on the faceless lady on the left and I like it how her checks and stripes are well co-ordinated that they don’t not compete for visual attention. Smart window-dressing.  I dig those toe-less leather boots too.

Again, the simple yet elegant styles of this head-less trio caught my lens. They are wearing great trans-seasonal pieces with the right proportion of shine. These clothes ooze confidence and fun.  Well-suited for the office and with some ornamented accessories, perfect for some after-hours rendezvous.

Do you ever wish that your man dressed as well as you? Well here is a model couple to take notes from. Was it his red tie or her white ruffles that caught your eye first? The couple exude laid-back glamour. They show us that it’s a cinch to look effortlessly stylish with tailored lines and unexpected details.  Their stylist must be one fine window dresser.  If it weren’t for my husband’s firm grip, I would have bought both outfits.

No-body Could Wear That

by cecylia on May 21, 2009

We all know that Hong Kong is a fashion destination to drool for. My 3-day shopping stint there in 2008 proved to be an experience of a lifetime. Lane Crawford in Times Square offered the best shoes and bags from Chloe to Cartier. We can all drool over the high-end labels on net-a-porter, but the Hong Kong price is a lot more lenient on your credit card. Even though I was more of less mesmerised by latest designer offers,  one quirky wall poster did catch my eye- as the ‘bag’ lady seems to have great legs but no arms…

Back home, I saw this in the  Lisa Ho’s shop window at the G.P.O. I wonder if the same artist supplied the same incorporeal models…
