The Great Mission

by cecylia on June 17, 2011

The highlight of June for me was Mission 65, a charity event organised by the WhiteHouse Institue of Design‘s styling students to raise funds for Prahran Mission. Designers such as Anthony Capon, Candice De Ville, Jenny Bannister, Kara Baker, Madam Virtue and students were invited to create original 40s-style garments from pieces they had to source from the Prahran Mission vintage shops. Their original creations were then bid on and auctioned off to raise funds for the charity. Prahran Mission supports homeless people and people with mental illnesses.  It was such a great cause and it was the night of nights!

When I heard about the theme being 1940s, I didn’t have to think twice about my outfit! For faithful followers of my blog, you would remember this pink jacket. It was a souvenir I got in Singapore at a vintage designer sale. This is an original Christian Dior skirt suit! See how I modernised it with leggings in this post. I wasn’t allowed to try it on at the boutique but I figured I’ll squeeze into it when the opportunity came.  I teamed it with vintage accessories including a Christian Dior clutch. Keeping it in the family.

It is always a joy to see Lisa, the Stylus Muse. She looked ravishing in her black vintage gown and her velvet hat from Lost & Found Market. I picked it out for her :)

Hannah, the best dressed lady of the night, is wearing an amazing feathered headpieces hand-made by Steph, also in her own head creation. Such sophistication!

I’m flanked by 2 models – the stunning Freya (in Madam Virtue couture, of course) and the demure Hitomi ( in Ralph Lauren).

My Madam Virtue family- the ever so stylish Dean and JC, just returned from their around-the-world buying trip. I don’t know how they found the time to create their 40s style outfit! Ingenious!

Candice De Ville, the hair and makeup director of the event, as well as a designer of an original 40s skirt set, dolled up all the models using her faultless knowledge of vintage glamour, transported everyone from the 21st century to the 40s post-war era. JC, looking divine in his velvet suit and sequinned bow-tie and pants! I’ve never met a designer who wears couture with such aplomb!

Everyone did their bit by bidding on their favourite pieces. I didn’t need more clothes so we bid on a vintage Giorgio Armani suit for my hubby, since that’s the only attire he can wear! But sadly, in the end he didn’t win. I hope the winner cherishes the suit!

As you know, I’m clueless when it comes to make-up, let alone 40s style. So when Miss Aimmey came to my aid, I was stoked! She is such a talented hair and makeup artist. Aimmey specialises in weddings and events. For Mission 65, she did hours of research to perfect the vintage look for me. I cannot wait to collaborate with her in future fashion shoots! Thank you so much Aimmey!

And if you’re wondering why an asian chick has such long eyelash, well it’s because I got lash extensions, all thanks to the amazing Ardita! I got so many compliments about my lashes. Asian eyes are difficult to work with, but Ardita is so professional. Afterall, she is half Roman and we all know how much effort the Italians put into their looks. Call her on 0451 951 464 or contact her on ardita@ardita.com.au to make an appointment.

I didn’t get to eat dinner before the event so throughout it, my tummy was begging me for food. Since it was so late, all the restaurants were closed so we could only get ‘midnight snacks’ from the supermarket. Here I am trying to look like I have gone forward in time from the 1940s to the present day of junk-food. Ah it was such an amazing experience to get a taste of the refined style of a begone era. I certainly wish that all of us dressed up more often! And that Prahran Mission will continue to do its good work in supporting those in need. Well done guys!

All that glitters is not gold

by cecylia on November 19, 2009

I saw some gorgeous sparkly dresses on Net-A-Porter and I thought I should share with you- for all of you  fashionistas who like to party, here are some beautiful pieces to inspire and indulge your senses in.

Rachel Gilbert Paige bow sequin dress. What a beauty! I love the 2 shoulder bows and the sweetheart neckline with the tank-top look. Don’t be afraid to wear it during the day to a cocktail party, you can shimmer your way through the drinks to the admiration of every pair of eyes in the room.

Sass & Bide Going it Alone dress. Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clark never make mistakes. Every garment they make is strong and sexy. This strapless frock is flattering- it molds to your torso, cinches your waist with a pin-stripe bow and flares out around your hips with just the right amount of sparkles. Another high-recommended dress!

Sonia Rykiel sequin embellished dress- definitely on my lust-have list. This is a classic, nude is flattering on any skin tone. The origami bow nipped at the waist is very dramatic. The sequins used here are the small metallic ones, so the dress is probably not light, no need to go to the gym then.

YSL sequin strapless jumpsuit. This is rather reminiscent of Giorgio Armani’s tailoring. I love the velvet bow around the waist. I am a big fan of bows and jumpsuits. Plus this is a harem-style jumpsuit, tres chic!

Rachel Gilbert again- her Lindsay sequined satin dress. Cute neckline- very frivolous, love the diamond detailing. This dress would be cute to wear during the day with black footless tights. Gotta make the most of the sparkles!

“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”
— Khaled Hosseini (A Thousand Splendid Suns)

Girls, shimmer on!
