Sale Time!

by cecylia on December 25, 2010

A little while back I attended the Damselfly and Miss Lyndel Yeo’s VIP sale. I came to support 2 of my favourite Melbournian designers – Christianna and Lyndel. I bought hubby a Christmas present from the Elias range, and scored a black silk dress from MLY, the same one Lindy Klim had on; a panther ring and necklace from Damselfly, I will show you them in another post…I don’t mean to be secretive, I just think they deserve their own post on my blog. But here are some pictures from the night…

A Damselfly neckpiece

Lyndel trying on sizes

Just like Damselfly’s 10 year anniversary party, I brought Theodore along again. Here’s Lyndel with her man, Dan. They are the most gorgeous and down-to-earth couple. Theodore’s licking crumbs off the floor…as usual.

Lyndel and models: Olivia A (left) from Giant and Nina K from Scene. It turns out that Olivia was recently in a photoshoot for Covet Magazine whilst wearing clothes from our boutique.. I couldn’t recognise her sans the makeup…

Taking Lyndel by surprise :D

Ah finally a peak at my new bob, sans Moroccan Oil. I’m with a friend and Theodore, wearing vintage necklace and my favourite printed silk Alldressedup dress.

It’s Boxing Day today! Did you all have a lovely Christmas with your loved ones? Anyone hitting the shops today?

The Night at Lou’s

by cecylia on December 23, 2010

Recently my good friend Lou Pardi, editor-at-large of the beautiful Peppermint magazine held a celebration party at her chic apartment. I asked to share her resume with me, and this is a list of pies she’s had her fingers in:

  • A legal secretary for many years in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne
  • Then an executive assistant in corporate
  • In between office jobs I was an animal attendant at a dog pound and most recently an executive assistant at Zoos Victoria
  • She was also amateur comedian for a few years
  • She’s also been freelance writing for over 5 years
  • She was the Editor of T-world, the world’s only T-shirt magazine
  • Now Melbourne Editor-at-large of Peppermint magazine, doing freelance journalism and contributing to Beat,www.theagendadaily.com, triple j mag and more!

She is happy to leave the corporate world (sounds familiar?) to do more freelancing. A lady of many, many talents. I think she is much more likely to become the Editor of Vogue than me :D

These blush polka-dot silk pants by Karla Spetic are a new addition to my work closet. I love the luxurious material and the polka dots! Sorry about my TERRIBLE hair…I promise I will post pictures of my new crop soon! Here’s Theodore, having a moment with Mom. I’m in Zara jacket, vintage white shirt, Mawi Dynamite ring, Karla Spetic pants, Miss Sixty wedges. I haven’t worn these wedges since this party

Here with Kimberley of Dream.Delight.Inspire, and a really witty zoologist!

The beautiful BusiChic Cheryl giving Theodore a cuddle. I love this chick. She has great style, great personality and a great blog!

And Sam, the stylish designer of Bento, in her designs. You can check out her amazing blog Backstage at Bento for fabulous tips if you’re banker who also wants to be a designer. As you may recall, Sam and I attended the Paspaley event not long ago and since then we’ve adopted the pearl trend =)

Here’s one for the boys- lego cufflinks! Aussie colours too! Oi Oi Oi!

I’ve got to introduce you to these  3 very creative people. From left to right: Keegan, Charles and Rebecca (she made her own necklace and dress!!!). Keegan (label: Margery Daw) and Rebecca (label: Pine Lime) are fashion designers who have a boutique called The Clothesline Collective on 62 Rebecca Walk Northbank Place, you’d be crazy not to check out their beautifully hand crafted garments and accessories.

And Charles, the other half of Sam, is a gallery owner, who will be opening his gallery in the new year - 100th Gallery. Cannot wait to see his new pad and all the amazing pieces he will showcase!

Saucy Ladies

Cheryl in vintage and Camper heels. I am so blessed to have so many talented and stylish friends with whom I can share a meal, a sip and style tips.

Merry Christmas fashionistas!

Blue Hawaii at Nuffnang!

by cecylia on December 13, 2010

As you may have noticed, I’m a Nuffnang blogger, ie Nuffnang provides the ads for this blog. You may have heard that the divine Lady Melbourne won the prestigious Nuffnang Blog Award in Singapore last year. Recently Nuffnang hosted a pre-Christmas party themed ‘Blue Hawaii.’

On the plane back home from Paris I watched a beautiful movie called Princess Ka’iulani - so moving and inspiring. It evoked my sense of justice and patriotism. A must-see if you like history and gorgeous Victorian dresses.

I had been so busy that I didn’t have time to organise a costume but the night before I saw a peak of blue in the distant corner of my wardrobe- it was a 2 piece blue silk Jenny Bannister creation that I had worn to my graduation (yes from vet studies) 4 years ago. Thank God I still fit into it and I also remembered in our last year at vet we also had a Hawaiian theme party so I still had some layers lying around somewhere.

My gorgeous friend and fellow blogger Jess Dempsey of What Would Karl Do. Her dress is from Asos, sky-rocketing heels from Lisa Ho. She was the best-dressed on the night, of course. Super stunning.

I’m in my vintage 2 piece, Aris Geldis necklace and Repettos. Yes I went straight from work.

One of the questions I asked on the night to the team of Nuffnang was ‘What does Nuffnang’ actually mean??? Here is the answer:

“Nuffnang” is a word in Jafaikan. It means “Real Good/Cool!” Jafaikan is a new multicultural dialect that is spreading amongst young Londoners, whether their parents are of Bengali, West Indian, Arab, Brazilian or London Stock… Sounds nuffnang!

This is Grace, in an original Hawaiian dress, also a blogger who blogs about arts and crafts she makes. She is the wife of the Director of Nuffnang.

Can you believe that Jess did her hair herself? I am really missing my long hair

Jess and I carrying our leather totes, hers by Chloe and mine by Bally.

Jess, Poppy and Sara from StyleMelbourne – who is also so gorgeous and talented who essentially owns her own online magazine!

And the real treat of the evening was meeting Candice from Super Kawaii Mama, who is both a blogger, a vintage hair and makeup artist, a model, a mother of 2 and an ‘Ambassador of Glamour’ (yes it actually says that on her business card!) I love it that she can speak vintage and her figure (think Dita von Teese but not too raunchy) really suits the vintage eras. She educated me on that vintage from 80s and 90s isn’t technically vintage, what is vintage should only come from a certain era. Noted. I asked how she learnt to do vintage hair and makeup- she actually learnt it all first-hand from her glamorous aunties, one of whom used to be a show girl. Ladies, if you like vintage glamour, speak to Candice, you will be in super good hands.

As I headed home, layers all off, I pondered about my blogging life. Ideally I would love to be a full-time blogger…well actually ideally I would love to be the fashion editor of Vogue…but that’s been my dream for over a decade and probably will continue to be a dream…But right now I’m learning to juggle being a veterinarian, a boutique owner and a blogger all at the same time and as much as I love multi-tasking there’s nothing worse than not to give everything your all. So my dear readers and skimmers (I call them squizzers actually) thank you for reading this blog. And I hope you have been inspired in a positive manner to further appreciate your love of art, design and fashion.

Merci beaucoup. Cheers to you and ‘Aloha’!

Flowers and the Canberra Vintage Fair

by cecylia on November 30, 2010

Recently I had a perfect excuse to have a weekend away and to visit the capital city of our country, Canberra : for a wedding!

This lovely couple is going to be my future cousins-in-law! The bride has become one of my closest friends in a short space of time – we have so much in common! She is like a sister I’ve never had (because I’m an only child). We share the same passions for vintage gems, macaroons, shoes (We’re the same shoes size!), cute miniature Japanese tea sets and believe it or not, we’re both PK’s (Pastor’s kids/daughters). Anyway, I was delighted to be asked to be her Matron of Honor and their wedding was just beautiful.

My plane outfit- vintage blouse, vintage Jaeger couture blazer, MaxMara wool pants, Jil Sander suede heels from Milan (favourite shoe-venirs from Foxtown!) The brooch covered by my hand is Mawi, the belt is vintage and the bag is Bally (a bag-enir from Switzerland…this was in fact my first designer hand bag…but it’s so new because I rarely use it because I’m so accident-prone. Bally makes the softest leather bags in the world- I’m not kidding. This bag was extra special because I bought it in its country of origin and the style was not available in Melbourne =)

One of the reasons this wedding was so special and unique is because the bride and groom put so much effort into making their big day eco-friendly. As you can see all the recycled bottles were collected by their friends to be used as flower pots, candle holders as well as crayon/coloured-pencil jar. So everyone helped and everyone was part of their special day!

The bride didn’t splurge at a florist, she did it her own way. Early in the morning we drove to the local market to buy fresh flowers and make the posies ourselves. Thanks to everyone’s contribution, we got the job done in 1/3 of the time!

The next post will be featuring the best bits of the wedding. But first things first I must report to you about the best vintage fair I’ve ever attended in my life!!! I got to go because we finished the floral arrangement job early =)

It may not look like much…but the quality of the pieces, all vintage gems from different eras (from the 20s through to the 70′s) were in mint condition. There was a stall with garments from the Victorian era! I loved all the black lace pieces but I don’t think I could keep these pieces in good condition like their previous owners did.

I found some amazing garments which I will share with you in future posts. Below is a jewellery stall that had the biggest collection of vintage brooches, earrings and necklaces. I was extra smitten by the silk Chanel wrist bag (on my left arm) and the vintage Moschino heart bag!

I don’t get the chance to go shopping nowadays, unless I’m on holidays. I felt like I was transported to a beautiful place of a bygone era, a fashion museum, a wearable candy store- vintage heaven. I know you’re dying to know what I bought on the day…I’ll tell you soon!

But since I can’t hold in my exuberant excitement I’ll let you have a sneak peak at my favourite cardigan:

I’m having a quick siesta before the wedding, in my bridesmaid’s dress. The cardigan is knitted from metallic yarn and has a nude silk lining underneath which is just heavenly. Not a single pull to be found, all the buttons are coated in golden weaving too. Ah they don’t make clothes like they used to.

Thank you so much to Canberra’s The Way We Wear Vintage Fair, thank you for making my Canberra trip extra-memorable =)

I can’t wait to wear my raffia coat!
