MARY KATRANZOU

Do not let Mary Katranzou’s sweet, warm, girl-next-door exterior trick you into thinking that she is anything ‘ordinary’. Armed with fierce intelligence and unbridled creativity, the Athens-born, London-based designer has been a driving force in cementing print as one of the key elements in fashion design. I recall meeting the designer in Paris in 2010 on a buying trip and being completely blown away by her elaborate jewel-prints. You can only imagine my disappointment when I heard that she was already stocked in Melbourne in a nearby boutique. Originally trained in architecture, her trompe l’oeil prints were created for interiors but after completing her MA at Central Saint Martins, she shifted her attention to garments. Her first ready-to-wear collection of 9 dresses at London Fashion Week in 2008 proved to be a huge success. She loves to base her prints on icons of luxury, artistic objects that are only wearable under the transformation of her skilled designs. She has featured stamps, perfume bottles, paintings, artisan blown glass just to name a few. But equally important to Katranzou is the cut and silhouette of her garments. Each dress size of each style in her collections requires military precision to ensure that the prints are in their most flattering placements. Her preferred shapes include A-line dresses with sleeves or strapless forms. Having received countless awards and successfully collaborated with Topshop and Longchamp, Katranzou continue to dazzle the fashion world with her unparalled innovation.
