The Fine Things in Life are found in FIORINA

by cecylia on December 21, 2011

Do you recall the BCBG Max Azria snake print pants I wore in the previous post? That was the outfit I wore to the Fiorina VIP Christmas night. I brought Theodore along but he had to wait outside because it was jam packed! And it’s no wonder. Fiorina has a spectacular shop cum gallery and the most glamorous VIP list. The boutique is a bejewelled candy store. The necklaces, rings and bracelets are wearable heirloom art. I didn’t even get to try any on because there were so many customers! Isn’t Fiorina’s sister, Franca divine in the neon pink above? Fiorina’s brother Maurice is another talented artist in the family, his eye-popping fluorescent tiles and canvases (covered in resin) reflect on the family’s rich Italian heritage and his love for hip-hop. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I did taking them.

Must admit, I chose the most colourful photos to show you, to get you in the mood right before Christmas! Hope you all have something exquisite planned for you and your loved ones. I look forward to hearing about how you are spending Christmas 2011 and cannot wait to show you my new blog post this Friday! :)

The Colourful Cullen

by cecylia on November 21, 2011

A few weekends back, as mentioned here, hubby and I had the chance to stay at the Cullen for a night, in celebration of our 4 year wedding anniversary. Being an avid colour and art lover, the only thing I like more than shopping is visiting art galleries and museums, I was so excited about our stay I had excitement exiting my ears. After being warmly welcomed by the achingly hip staff, we were escorted to our brightly-lit hotel room..and voila!

Growler & Ned Kelly

Outift: vintage Anthea Crawford dress , vintage necklace (from Oakleigh Market), vintage clutch (from Milan), vintage shoes and jade bracelet; Edenborough Evans Luna silver ring and Imperium bracelet

The next morning, I had the utmost pleasure of attending the Art Aficionado Tour with Jane O’Neil, the hotel’s art curator, a good friend of Adam Cullen, who understands and articulates his paintings so well that I felt like I was live inside his studio. Jane explained about Cullen’s background and his works.

Adam Cullen started the Grunge Art movement in Sydney and in 2000, became the winner of the prestigious Archibald Prize for his depiction of actor David Wenham. He was like Alexander McQueen, who was considered the ‘enfant terrible’ in London fashion, Cullen was the wild one in Australian art. He is Irish, and rumoured to be distantly-related to Ned Kelly so like the majority of Australians, he is on Team Ned. In the hotel, there are numerous paintings of the Kelly gang, of Ned, his horse, his friends, and the policemen who hunted them. I didn’t know about this, but Ned Kelly’s group often dressed in drag, one of his friends used to wear dresses to scout out the local bank. Cullen’s paintings of the men often show them in nighties, wearing lipstick and a quiff. There is only one painting of Ned Kelly in menswear, in his prison greens, a historical documentation of his last day before his sentenced hanging.

Adam Cullen was also fond of exploring the animalistic side of humans. During his art school days, he strapped a rotting pig’s head around his ankle for 2 weeks and took it everywhere he went. Everywhere. To bed, to the bus, to the bar, to push the physical boundaries of art and to demonstrate in a shocking way how humans treat animals. Many paintings of dogs (Growler), horses and even one of the endangered Tasmanian Devil (painted to raise funds to rescue our national fauna) stand in the hotel’s foyer. My personal favourite is his allegoric self-portrait of Phar-Lap. Just like the legendary racer, Cullen has rose to so much fame that he’s also become a ‘winning bet’ in the artistic circles and has to answer to increasing demands from the public.

For me, Cullen’s work not only evoke strong emotions and themes that are close to my heart, justice, human pain and suffering, our treatment towards animals…it is his ingenious amalgamation of colours that captivated my visual senses. Bold, loud and perfectly married, Cullen’s work is a delight to view and study, especially when I’m lying on the soft king size bed.

Thank you so much to Emma, Jess and Jane for organising our stay. We cannot wait to visit the Cullen again!

Buy Nothing New Frock Swap

by cecylia on October 4, 2011

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending a Frock Swap soiree at Kyra Pybus’ place with hubby and Theodore. Kyra, the PR guru of Pybus PR, Jane, of Jane Hayes Consulting, and Iolanthe, the Ruby Slipper Consultant, organised this beautiful event to kick off ‘Buy Nothing New October’ as we embrace eco-aware consumerism and cleverly recycled designs. We have all pledged to buy nothing new this month, except for food and drinks…

All loved up for the lovebird, ‘Beaky’.
We were treated to delicious nibblies, French bubbly, and the decadent ambience of Kyra and Nish’s inviting home. Their apartment had the luxurious woody scent of Cire Trudon’s Ernesto‘, courtesy of Peony Melbourne. Cire Trudon candles are made from rice, soy and coprah, contain no nasty chemicals which harm our environment. The candle house has supplied and manufactured for the the Royal family in Versailles since the 17th century, and nowadays for the big maisons including Hermes, Cartier, Dior and Guerlain. I think a visit to Peony Melbourne is a must! Scented candles are the ultimate mood-lifter!
Another decadent touch to the event was the husk boat floral arrangement by Domain Flowers. Domain Flowers are mindful florists, they re-use their husks, pods, seeds and branches of plants. They are also purchasing a mulcher so that the Collingwood Children’s Farm, an organic community garden, can reuse any unused organic material. Such an eco-friendly florist!
I first encountered the beautifully re-crafted jewellery label Ghost & Lola at French High Tea, in this post. Every Ghost & Lola is made entirely of nothing new because every piece of vintage jewellery deserves a second chance at rebirth. The designer gathers all the jewellery components from around the world and recreates them. I am deeply in love with the pink bracelet.

The stylish pack- Jane, in Chloe, Iolanthe, in Missoni and Kyra, in vintage and Cape loafers. Every girl who has a pair of ballet flats should also own a pair of Cape! Photo coutesy of Iolanthe.

My jaw hit the ground when I saw these rings, each made entirely from recycled aluminium cans, thanks to Miles Mason Trading Company. They are helping support Buy Nothing New month by showcasing these beautiful wall-mountable butterflies and swallows which are made of old household crockery. I think these laser-cut plates would be beautiful jewellery displays!

I do apologize that our beloved Chihuahua have not been featured on the blog for a while…here is Theodore in his smart little red cardigan that Bijoux, Kyra and Nish’s angora rabbit, who was very camera-shy, (hence we don’t have a photo of her) handed down to him. :D

Theodore in an obi (vintage scarf tied around like a belt), not enjoying the dress-up as much as we are…

The gorgeous Kyla, Lisa, Leeyong and me

Thank you so much Kyra and Nish for opening up your beautiful space for us, for your warm hospitality and for letting Theodore join us! Thank you Iolanthe for the delicious chocolate cake, dips and fruits. Thank you Jane for the French bubbly and everyone for the gorgeous company! I had such a delightful time and am really excited that we are all going to celebrate Buy Nothing New October ! It will be a challenge, especially for me… but I am going to do my best! Come visit me this Sunday at Take 2 Market (the best vintage market) in the Hawthorn Town Hall (Corner Burwood and Glenferrie Roads) so we can buy nothing new together!

Details of my outfit shall be revealed in the next post…until then, have a beautiful day! xx

Craving Cardona Bonache

by cecylia on September 28, 2011

I can only imagine your pupils dilate and the sheer amazement on your face when you see these pieces, because they are pretty much the same feelings I had when I laid eyes on this amazing collection, designed by Cardona Bonache. This is their 3rd collection, or ‘lesson’, as Mr Cardona and Mr Bonache calls. These photos were taken at Paris Fashion Week last year in September, when I went to visit the Felder Felder twins. This show room housed some seriously hip designers, Alexander Wang was on the floor below. Each season, the Spanish duo creates a collection based on a couture tailoring technique. They define, explore, and translate the idea, the technique into real wearable garments. For their SS11 collection, ‘Bellows‘, the boys created symmetrical pleats and folds and developed stiff and shiny fabrics which retained the bellows even when worn. In couture, a ‘bellow’ is a side fold consisting of 2 parallel fabric folds used to increase depth, its function is to create volume and generate movement in garments. I was so tempted to order the entire collection but in the end I chose the shoes- in cream. And I’ve been waiting for my shoes to arrive so I could post this up. But to this day, I am still waiting for them…Perhaps they have been forgotten, folded away, somewhere…

Outfit: vintage silk blouse, Karla Spetic wool skirt, Miu Miu jacket/dress, Jil Sander patent sandals.

How have you all been? I’ve been a little out of photographic action due to a viral assault, I promise as soon as I get better, I will get out and get some outfit photos for you. Until then, virtual hugs and kisses!
