Not since high school have I watched a Silent Film. Not voluntarily anyway. But last night we headed to the Jam Factory to view the 5 times Academy Awarded film, The Artist, with equal dose of curiosity and doubt. Curiosity because a good friend recently gushed about the movie but refused to spill anything (good friend indeed), and doubt because I doubted that I would stay awake in it. I was awarded ‘Best Snoozer’ at uni because I fell asleep the most times during lectures. Dim lights, warm ambience and monotonous voices, my head always automatically reclined on friends’ shoulders… until the loud bang of the lecturer’s baton on my desk woke me from sweet slumber…
But not in The Artist. Despite ample help from the comfy recliner chair in Gold Class and 2 glasses of Sauv Blanc beforehand, neither of my usual accomplices succeeded to induce me into a post-prandial coma. The Artist was that good. Set in the glamorous 20s and 30s, ladylike and demure dressing complete with sequinned flapper dresses, sweet cloche hats and leather gloves resonated with the vintage lover in me. As did the art deco furnishings and the gentlemenswear complete with bowties, fedoras and waistcoats.
The hero actor was so dashingly handsome that every time he smiled, I found myself smiling back. And the loyal pooch, whose fierce intelligence and utmost devotion convinced me that it was a human actor trapped in fur. But the one who moved me both to cacophonous laughter and water-fall tears was the beautiful female protagonist. She rose to fame from obscurity, embodied such amazing kindness and passion, had a penchant for fur and flowers, and a delicious bob to boot. I related to her immensely because of these simlarities and the fact that I worked as an extra too!
The Artist explores the contrasting themes of love and abandonment, highs and lows of stardom, and the way how drastically lives can change with the smallest opportunities. My favourite (silent) quote from the film was ‘To be a good actress, you have to be different‘, or something to that effect. Words of wisdom especially for a blogger. The move uplifted, invigorated and moved me. To laughs, to tears, and to write this post for you.

Definitely LOVED The Artist. It was one of the movies I had to see by myself (I often do that because I want to see so many movies that no one wants to see!) and I loved it. I was really entertained even through it was silent. And the couple is so beautiful!!!
